Silberborn: Raised Bog, Mountain Meadows and Hotels
Accommodation in Silberborn
Silberborn brings together two distinct aspects of nature: the Mecklenbruch raised bog lies northeast of the village in the Solling; Silberborn’s historic mountain meadows are maintained through extensive grazing. A guided tour through Mecklenbruch adds information about flora, fauna and nature conservation to the views of the landscape; on the mountain meadows, you can see how grazing helps preserve characteristic plants.
Mecklenbruch and its protected area
The Mecklenbruch raised bog covers 50 hectares and is considered one of the best-preserved raised bogs in Lower Saxony. The nature reserve covers a total area of 63 hectares. The figures refer to different areas: 50 hectares refers to the bog, and 63 hectares to the entire nature reserve. Mecklenbruch lies northeast of Silberborn in the Solling.
Grazing as landscape management
Silberborn’s historic mountain meadows are extensively grazed by Heck cattle, Exmoor ponies and Red Highland cattle. This management supports the return of characteristic meadow plants, including orchids, and preserves a diverse animal life. Unlike the bog tour, the focus here is on managing a historic meadow landscape through grazing. If you are interested in how landscape management and biodiversity work together, the mountain meadows offer a different way to experience Silberborn’s natural environment.
