Halle in the Ithbörde: Nature and village history
Accommodation in Halle
Halle in the Ithbörde
Halle is located in the Ithbörde, a landscape-shaped depression on the northwestern edge of the Alfelder Bergland. The Ith and Hils belong to the Weser-Leine-Bergland. The Ithbörde runs north to south between the Ith and Vogler ridges, is 17 kilometres long and three to five kilometres wide. Halle itself is framed by the Tönniesberg, Kruckberg and Ith. This means the village can be understood both in terms of its location in the depression and the surrounding ridges.
Forests, rocks and wetlands
The Ith Special Area of Conservation is an extensive woodland along the Ith ridge in the Ith-Hils hills. The steep slopes feature limestone cliffs with crevice vegetation, pioneer grassland on limestone, ravine and slope mixed forests, as well as small caves. Forests, limestone-rich sites and rocky areas each shape the landscape in different ways. On the southwestern slope of the central Ith lies the Pöttchergrund, a valley cut by a stream with wetland habitats.
Hiking and geology
The Ithbörde around Halle is ideal for long hikes. Themed hiking trails explain the geology of the area and give your walk a particular focus. The steep rock faces of the Ith cliffs also shape the landscape; they are well known among climbers throughout Germany. This means you can combine Halle and the Ithbörde with different interests: longer hikes and geological themes are just as much in focus as the striking rock faces.
Village history and rural character
Halle has more than 1,000 years of village history and is one of the oldest settlements documented in writing in the district of Holzminden. At the same time, the villages in the municipality of Halle have retained their rural character and continue to be shaped by agriculture. This offers two distinct perspectives to consider when planning your trip: Halle’s long history and the rural, agricultural character of the municipality’s villages. If you are choosing a destination based on history and landscape, you can take both aspects into account.
Exploring the landscapes of the Weser Uplands
In addition to the long hikes available in the Ithbörde around Halle, you can explore the landscapes of the Weser Uplands on hiking or cycling tours through the Vogler, Ith, Ottenstein Plateau and Rühler Schweiz. The Weser Cycle Route offers another way to discover the region by bike. The wider region therefore offers both tours through a variety of landscapes and opportunities to explore by bike.
