Heinade lies between Dassel to the southeast, Holzminden to the west and Stadtoldendorf to the north, on the eastern edge of Solling-Vogler Nature Park. The village is also located in the headwaters of the Spüligbach, a northwestern tributary of the Ilme. The neighbouring towns, the nature park and the stream provide different reference points for locating Heinade on the map.

Landscape in Heinade and the surrounding municipality

Within the municipality, Hellental stretches from Mecklenbruch in the southwest to the village of Hellental in the northeast. Some areas consist of extensively managed grassland and remnants of montane mountain meadows. The natural Helle meadow stream also runs through the valley. The valley includes small wet meadows and a few riverside trees. Stream sinks are a geological feature. Hellental thus brings together a range of landscape characteristics: grassland, remnants of mountain meadows, a meadow stream and distinctive geological formations.

The geographical details refer to different areas: the location on the nature park’s edge and in the headwaters describes Heinade; the landscape features of Hellental are within the municipality. This distinction helps you keep the village itself and the wider municipal area separate when planning your trip.

Glass art, museum and village bakehouse in Hellental

In the grounds of the Hellental History Museum, the Master Glass Stele “Hellental – Old Valley of the Glassmakers” commemorates the regional significance of glassmaking in the Old Valley of the Glassmakers in the Brunswick Solling. This specialist craft was practised there intermittently for around 550 years. The stele is a distinct point of reference for the region’s glassmaking history.

The village bakehouse in Hellental also reflects the area’s history and craftsmanship. After an extended renovation, it reopened to the public on 14 September 2008. Today, its historic architecture houses compact exhibitions on GLASS & BREAD. The Hellental History Museum can also be reached on stage 6 of the Weserbergland Trail (XW). If you plan to hike this stage, check the route conditions before setting out.

More to explore in the wider Holzminden destination

The wider Holzminden destination offers more landscape and cultural attractions. The ruins of Polle Castle stand on a hilltop about 25 metres high above the municipality of Polle in the Weser Valley. Bevern Castle offers a different architectural focus: the four-winged Renaissance complex was built between 1603 and 1612 around a square courtyard with a moat; two bridges and a castle garden are also part of the complex. At the Fürstenberg Castle Museum, the focus is on porcelain and views. It showcases porcelain from more than 265 years of production at the FÜRSTENBERG Porcelain Manufactory. The castle complex includes a viewing platform 80 metres above the Weser, with panoramic views of the Weser Valley and the tri-state border region.

Other cultural attractions range from monastic history to the history of the senses and industry. Amelungsborn Monastery lies on the B64 between Negenborn and Eschershausen in the district of Holzminden. Sensoria in Holzminden is Europe’s first interactive museum of smell and taste; it covers ten themed areas across 600 square metres. The Grünenplan Glass Museum traces the development of the Grünenplan glassworks from its founding in 1744 to modern production by Deutsche Spezialglas AG. Tools, workpieces and photographs explain the production processes. The museum also explores how glassblowers worked, how glassworks workers used to live and what unusual role canaries played in Grünenplan.

Cycling is another way to explore the region: the Weser Cycle Path is promoted in Holzminden for cycling trips through the region. In the town, there is a bicycle parking garage directly on the Weser Cycle Path at Johannismarkt, near the Sensoria Tourist Information Centre and the town centre. These attractions complement Heinade’s own geographical and cultural points of reference with further perspectives specifically associated with the wider Holzminden destination.
