Reichelsheim (Wetterau): Town Wall, Churches and Trails
Accommodation in Reichelsheim
Reichelsheim (Wetterau) offers several specific points of interest for a stay: sections of the historic town fortifications, buildings and trails described in different ways. The history of lignite mining is another topic. You can give these themes different weight when planning your trip: a walk along the town wall focuses on historic buildings, while the hiking trails offer their own points of reference.
Town Wall and Historic Buildings
On a walk in Reichelsheim, you can follow the historic town wall. Remains of the town wall, the western town gate and four of the original seven defensive towers have been preserved. The number of surviving towers can be compared with the original total.
The town hall was built from 1570 to 1576 and was then used mainly as a market hall. Its construction period and former main use provide two distinct points of reference for its history. The Protestant church in Reichelsheim is a pseudo-basilica dating from the 15th century. In Heuchelheim, a district of Reichelsheim, the church was endowed in 1420. These buildings therefore have different historical points of reference: the town hall’s construction period, the architectural classification of the Protestant church and the year the Heuchelheim church was endowed.
Walking and Hiking Trails
The Heuchelheim Loop is a hiking trail around Heuchelheim and is about 2.3 kilometers long. You can also take in the historic town wall on a walk. A walking path runs around Bergwerksee, offering another way to plan a walk around a clearly identified place.
The Blofeld Loop starts at the parking lot by the community center and follows a meadow path behind the last houses in Blofeld. A woodland path on the Blofeld Loop leads to Germany’s oldest wild cherry tree and from there along the southern side of Eichelberg. The routes therefore have distinctly different features: an approximate length is given for the Heuchelheim Loop, while the meadow path, wild cherry tree and Eichelberg provide points of reference on the Blofeld Loop.
Lignite Mining and Local History
The last lignite mining operations in the Wetterau region, sections VI and VII between the Reichelsheim districts of Weckesheim and Dorn-Assenheim, were permanently abandoned in 1991. This date places this part of local history in a different period from the buildings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Reichelsheim thus brings together different historical themes: surviving evidence of the town’s fortifications and architectural history, and the closure of the region’s last mining operations.
The Wetterau as a Regional Setting
The wider travel destination of Wetterau also provides its own regional setting. The nature reserves in the Wetterau district are accessible to visitors via information boards, observation points, and hiking and cycling trails. Bingenheimer Ried is one of the key areas of the “Auenverbund Wetterau” landscape conservation area.
A network of regional and long-distance cycling routes runs through the Wetterau, and many of these routes are connected. Numerous railway stations and stops make it possible to reach cycling routes in the Wetterau district by public transport. If you are planning to travel this way, check the schedules and stops for your date.
For cultural history, the wider travel destination offers the Wetterau Museum, which presents the history of the town and region from the Stone Age to the Early Middle Ages, as well as the history of the Celts and Romans. It is also a regional Limes information center for the central Wetterau. The Wetterau also offers discovery tours, including night watchman walks through old streets and themed tours of local attractions; dates vary for individual tours.
