In Nidda, the historic townscape and the parkland in the district of Bad Salzhausen offer different sides to a stay. In the town center, lanes and buildings shape the visit; in Bad Salzhausen, the spa park, graduation tower and terrain therapy trails offer their own starting points for planning.

Old Town and Town History

The market square is a starting point for a stroll around town. Its historic character is shaped by a fountain, the surrounding little lanes and renovated half-timbered buildings. In Nidda’s Old Town, narrow lanes lead past historic half-timbered houses and a castle. This makes it possible to explore the town center and its varied views.

The Lange Steg offers a route between the river and the historic center: built in 1607, the stone bridge crosses the Nidda into the historic center of the town of the same name. Those interested in architectural history will find another distinctive landmark in the Johanniter Tower. It was built from 1491 onward as part of a large monastery complex of the Order of St. John and is the last surviving remnant of Hesse’s oldest commandery of the Order of St. John and Germany’s eighth-oldest.

The Nidda Local History Museum provides an overview of the history of the town and its region. Frequent special exhibitions complement this focus; their subjects vary. It offers another perspective on the town’s history, distinct from strolling through the lanes and past historic buildings.

Spa Park and Trails in Bad Salzhausen

Bad Salzhausen is a district of Nidda. The 52-hectare spa park is distinguished by its rare plant and tree life and provides a landscape contrast to the historic center. The graduation tower has numerous benches where visitors can linger and breathe in the air. The graduation tower is closed during the winter season; check its operating period to match your visit.

Bad Salzhausen offers three certified terrain therapy trails: the Spa Park Loop, the Landgrave Loop and the Nature Trail Route. The Spa Park Loop is 2.8 kilometers long and runs along paved and compacted gravel paths. It has a somewhat steeper gradient in the Upper Spa Park. The 2.7-kilometer Nature Trail Route passes a nature trail with information boards and a wetland habitat.

The Spa Park Loop and the Nature Trail Route differ in length by only 100 meters. The other features described are therefore especially useful when comparing the two trails: the surface and gradient are specified for the Spa Park Loop, while the information boards and wetland habitat are noted for the Nature Trail Route. The Landgrave Loop is also part of the certified trail selection.

The Wetterau from a Regional Perspective

The Wetterau also offers its own nature and cycling attractions. In the Wetterau district, nature reserves are accessible to visitors via information boards, observation points, and hiking and cycling trails. The Bingenheimer Ried is one of the key areas of the “Auenverbund Wetterau” landscape conservation area.

A network of regional and long-distance cycle routes runs through the Wetterau; many routes connect with one another. Numerous railway stations and stops make it possible to reach the cycle routes in the Wetterau district by local public transport. As transport services and stopping patterns may change, check your connection for your travel date.
