Ortenberg combines a historic town center with distinctive cultural and natural attractions. When planning your trip, you can choose from different areas of interest: half-timbered architecture and church art, music in Lißberg, the Nidder floodplain, or routes for hiking and cycling. The Kalter Markt is also a major event that gives you a reason to plan your visit for a particular time of year.

Historic Town Center and St. Mary’s Church

Ortenberg was first referred to as a town in the 13th century. The town wall dates from this period and encloses the historic town center, with its many half-timbered buildings. The link between local history and the townscape is clear as soon as you look at the old center: the wall encloses the area where the half-timbered houses stand.

The three-aisled St. Mary’s Church houses one of the oldest choir stalls in Hesse. The church also contains a copy of the important Ortenberg Altar from the 15th century. Anyone interested in religious art will find two distinct historical points of interest here: the choir stalls and the altar copy.

Musical History in Lißberg

The Lißberg Musical Instrument Museum displays more than 2,000 originals and replicas. It has the world’s largest collection of hurdy-gurdies and bagpipes. The collection offers a specific point of interest for anyone interested in these instruments; the exhibition also distinguishes between originals and replicas.

At the museum, you can try out instruments at a music table. Cassettes or CDs provide an additional listening experience. The chance to explore the instruments yourself makes a visit to the museum different from simply viewing the collection. The museum is located in Lißberg, a district of Ortenberg.

Nature Along the Nidder

The NABU Ortenberg House at the Salzwiesen meadows, with its naturalistic outdoor grounds, is located in the Nidder floodplain, an area characterized by species-rich meadows. A restored section of the river lies directly behind the house. It provides a habitat for kingfishers, dragonfly species, and brown trout; beavers also visit the Nidder regularly.

Around the house, you can experience nature in different ways: with a net at the restored Nidder, with a magnifying glass in the species-rich flower meadow, and in the snack garden. The Salzwiesen and Weinberg von Selters nature reserve is close to the house. Salt-loving plants such as sea arrowgrass and strawberry clover grow there. The floodplain, river section, meadow, and nature reserve each offer a distinct point of interest for nature lovers.

Cycling and Hiking

The Vulkanradweg runs through Ortenberg’s town center and the districts of Lißberg, Eckartsborn, and Selters. If you want to explore by bike, this provides a useful guide for choosing where to stay and planning your route. The Ortenberg recreation area also has signposted hiking trails through the surrounding low mountain landscape.

Another hiking route is the Bonifatius Route, which passes through the municipality of Ortenberg and is of particular interest to hikers.

Kalter Markt and Old Town Tours

The Kalter Markt has been held every year in late October since the 13th century and is considered the largest folk festival in Upper Hesse. It includes a centuries-old horse and foal market as well as a large market with more than 400 stalls. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the program for the relevant year in advance.

Tours of the old town’s many sights include a walk along the Ortenberg Lantern Trail. As dates may vary, it is a good idea to check the current schedule before your trip. This will help you decide whether to focus your stay on a stroll through the historic town center, a museum visit, nature experiences, or the Kalter Markt.
