Ober-Mörlen brings together historic buildings, local history and experiences in nature. The castle is both a landmark and the town hall; on Winterstein, options range from an amphibian nature trail to a longer circular hike. Churches and chapels tell the story of different periods. This gives you plenty of ways to explore cultural history, observe nature and get active.

The castle and the townscape

Ober-Mörlen Castle is the town’s landmark. Its grounds include the imposing main building and the adjoining farmyard. The castle also serves as the town hall of the municipality of Ober-Mörlen. Cultural events take place on the grounds and in the park. If you’re planning your trip around an event, check the dates in advance.

Churches and chapels tell the story of the town

The Catholic parish church of St. Remigius is the oldest evidence of the Christian faith in the Mörler area; the parish was first mentioned in 1213. Different periods can also be seen in the building itself: the lower part of the church tower and the main portal are the oldest parts of the church. They were the only parts to survive both major fires.

The Marienkapelle, also known as the “little chapel,” has marked the eastern edge of the village since 1844. It stands at a historic crossroads where roads once branched off to Cleeberg, Butzbach, Nieder-Weisel and Rockenberg. The distinctive natural-stone building has an octagonal floor plan and a pointed roof. The Gustav-Adolf-Kirche is another example of local architectural history: this small chapel was built in 1926 in the style of a Baroque chapel, based on a design by architect and heritage preservationist Heinrich Walbe.

The 4.4-kilometre amphibian nature trail has seven stations with information about frogs, newts and salamanders. Ponds along the way offer the chance to observe these animals in their natural habitat. The trail is especially suitable for families with children, can be walked in street shoes and does not require a high level of fitness.

A longer option is the Natura Trail “Nature and Cultural Treasures in the Taunus – From Eichkopf to Haubergsgrund.” The 16.8-kilometre circular trail starts at the Winterstein car park near Ober-Mörlen. It is of moderate difficulty and is not marked throughout. The amphibian nature trail is considerably shorter by comparison. The two trails therefore differ mainly in length and stated difficulty.

Landscape and digital orientation

The Usa River shapes the landscape of Ober-Mörlen; the Usa Valley runs through the entire municipal area from west to east. If you’d like to get to know the town through its interesting spots, notable buildings and historic places, you can take the digital Ober-Mörlen village tour. It complements the hiking trails with a look at local history.
