Züntersbach is a state-recognized resort in a predominantly rural landscape. Churches and the historic cemetery wall are among the local cultural highlights; the Rhön circular trails 5 and 7 offer views of the town.

Churches and History in the Townscape

Züntersbach is mentioned as a settlement in the Saalegau around 900; by 1167, the town had its own church. Its religious heritage includes the Protestant Bergkirche and the Catholic St. Boniface Church. The Protestant Bergkirche stands on elevated ground on a promontory at the eastern edge of town. The Catholic church was built in 1880 and is located at the southern exit from Züntersbach. The two churches are therefore situated in different parts of the town.

St. Boniface Church houses a Late Gothic Madonna by an unknown, probably Franconian master. This artwork adds a distinct perspective on the Catholic church’s interior and furnishings to its architectural history. Those interested in local history can consider architectural styles and the artwork as different aspects of the religious heritage.

Sandstone Cemetery Wall

Another historic structure is the cemetery wall in Züntersbach. It was built from sandstone on a hillside around 1566. A tall round-arched portal was incorporated into the wall in 1609. It is framed by pillars with plinths and has a multiply moulded arched surround. Plinths are block-like base slabs beneath the pillars; the mouldings give the portal frame a stepped outline. The structure thus offers a way to see both the material used and the design of an individual architectural feature.

Views of Züntersbach Along the Rhön Circular Trails

Rhön Circular Trail 7 passes over the Kühlschlag and offers a lovely view of Züntersbach. On Rhön Circular Trail 5, the viewpoint described is in the area around the town: after the climb in Eckarts, there are views of the neighbouring village of Züntersbach. The routes therefore refer to different locations—Kühlschlag on Trail 7 and the climb in Eckarts on Trail 5.

Please note that the trail markings for Rhön Circular Trail 7 are due to change in April 2026. Check the current signage before setting out. When planning Rhön Circular Trail 5, you should also take current route conditions into account.

Natural Monument on Brückenauer Weg

The Läus Oak on Brückenauer Weg is a natural monument estimated to be 300 to 400 years old. After a storm, the tree lost part of its former appearance; check its condition on site. The oak adds a natural-history feature alongside the churches and the historic wall.

Cultural Attractions in the Wider Destination of Sinntal

There are also historic attractions in the wider destination of Sinntal. Near Sinntal-Altengronau is the Old Jewish Cemetery, a cultural monument preserved in its original condition. More than 1,400 gravestones have been identified; the first graves were laid out in 1680. Religious calendar restrictions apply to visits to the Old Jewish Cemetery. Therefore, check the current visiting rules before visiting the cemetery.

Relics of a church more than 500 years old are preserved in the Church of the Ascension in Sinntal-Altengronau. These include a tabernacle niche made from a piece of the old church wall that was incorporated into the new building. The cemetery and the church offer different insights into the history of this place in the wider destination of Sinntal.

Fritillary Meadows and Regional Hikes

The Sinnwiesen nature reserve stretches from Sinntal-Altengronau to Sinntal-Jossa and includes the fritillary meadows. Flowering is seasonal and weather-dependent; you can admire the flowers from various cycling and hiking trails, including the paved cycle and pedestrian path between Altengronau and Jossa. The annual Fritillary Festival is celebrated in Sinntal-Altengronau at the end of April. The date and programme may vary, so it is worth checking the latest event information before your trip.

Another hiking option in the wider destination of Sinntal is the nearly 14-kilometre Spessart Trail Quellwinkel Kinzig. The circular route leads from Sinntal-Sterbfritz to Sinntal-Weiperz and passes through two nature reserves. Open landscapes and wooded slopes alternate along the route. From the ridges around the source of the Kinzig, there are far-reaching views towards the Rhön, Spessart and Vogelsberg. Check current route conditions before setting out.
