In Sinntal, you can make nature experiences, local history and seasonal events different focal points of your trip. Chess flower meadows, hiking trails, the Altengronau natural swimming pool and historic sites offer concrete starting points for planning a stay.

Nature in Sinntal: Meadows, Heights and Trails

The Sinnwiesen Nature Reserve stretches from Sinntal-Altengronau to Sinntal-Jossa and includes the chess flower meadows. You can view the flowers from various cycling and hiking trails, for example from the paved cycle and footpath between Altengronau and Jossa. The flowering period depends on the weather. The Chess Flower Festival is held annually in Altengronau at the end of April, with free guided tours across the meadows. The timing and organization may vary from year to year.

The landscape’s variety is also on display along the Spessart Spur Quellwinkel Kinzig: Open areas alternate with wooded slopes, and the views from the ridges around the source of the Kinzig extend towards the Rhön, Spessart and Vogelsberg. The circular trail is just under 14 kilometres long, running from Sinntal-Sterbfritz to Sinntal-Weiperz and through two nature reserves. Numerous orchid species grow right beside the trail in the Stephanskuppe and Weiperzberg nature reserves; their flowering times vary with conditions.

Sinntal is also home to the highest mountain in the Main-Kinzig district, at 585 metres. Another natural highlight is the source area of the Kinzig near Sinntal-Sterbfritz: tables and benches invite you to take a break with a view across the orchards. The Kinzig spring connects to the Three Castles Trail from Sterbfritz to SchlĂĽchtern, linking Schwarzenfels Castle, Steckelberg Castle Ruins and Brandenstein Castle.

Local History and Seasonal Events

The Old Jewish Cemetery lies near Sinntal-Altengronau. It has been preserved in its original condition and contains more than 1,400 identified gravestones; the first graves date back to 1680. Access is restricted on certain religious calendar dates. Please check the latest visitor information in advance.

Relics of a church more than 500 years old have been preserved in the Church of the Ascension in Sinntal-Altengronau. These include a sacrament niche in a section of the old church wall that was incorporated into the new building. Those interested in the town’s architectural history can see a specific detail here that reveals the connection between the older church and the new building.

Schwarzenfels Castle also hosts a cultural event in Sinntal: its Christmas market takes place annually on the first weekend of Advent. Dates and details may vary from year to year.

Routes by Length and Character

The Spessart Spur Jossa-Sinn-Blick is a circular trail just under six kilometres long. It starts at the sports ground in Sinntal-Jossa and passes a shelter with a barbecue area on the hilltop above Jossa, a state-recognized health resort. At just under 14 kilometres, the Spessart Spur Quellwinkel Kinzig is the longer of the two loops. Comparing the routes can help you plan how far to walk; they also differ in the landscapes and stops described. The shelter with a barbecue area is on the Spessart Spur, while the Quellwinkel Kinzig route offers views across the ridges and a section through nature reserves. Trail conditions may change, so it is a good idea to check for current information before setting out on a hike.

Natural Swimming Pool and Beaver Watching

The Altengronau natural swimming pool has a water area of 680 square metres. Its listed facilities include a sandstone diving rock, a slide hill, a water play area for children, a waterfall, a children’s playground and a table-tennis table. Grassy sunbathing areas, wooden decks and relaxation loungers complete the facilities. If you plan to visit the pool, check the latest operating information before your trip.

Wooden benches and tables are available at Willingsgrundweiher pond. As well as beaver lodges, you may also spot beavers if you are patient and lucky; the animals are active at dusk and at night. The SchlĂĽchtern Forestry Office offers guided tours along the Beaver Information Trail on request. The options at the pond therefore differ: you can plan a break, hope for a wildlife sighting that depends on luck, or request a guided tour.
