Jossa: Cycling routes, nature and culture in the Spessart
Accommodation in Jossa
Jossa is located in the Spessart Nature Park. When planning a trip here, the main things to consider are cycling, hiking, nature and a local cultural attraction. The routes differ significantly in type and stated length: a regional cycling route of about 33 kilometres and the 5.3-kilometre Spessart Trail. Also of interest are the Sinnwiesen, a protected landscape area, and the Kneipp facility in the recreational area. These themes offer different ways to explore Jossa, depending on your travel interests.
Cycling along the Jossa
The European Cultural Cycle Route “Pearls of the Jossa” is about 33 kilometres long. It follows the River Jossa from the Bavarian enclave of Emmerichsthal, through Sinntal-Jossa and the Jossgrund area, to Villbach. Jossa is therefore on a route that extends beyond the town; you can consider the local section as part of the longer route. The cycle route is marked with a yellow EU boat symbol on a blue background. This distinctive symbol helps you identify the route.
Sinntal-Jossa also connects to the Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R2 and the Rhönexpress Railway Cycle Route. This means that, in addition to the “Pearls of the Jossa”, two other named cycle routes can be included in your local tour planning. Since route signs may change, check for current information about these connections before setting off.
Hiking the Spessart Trail
The “Jossa-Sinn-Blick” Spessart Trail offers a different route option. It is 5.3 kilometres long and starts at the sports ground in Sinntal-Jossa. The path first follows the River Jossa, then varied, well-marked meadow and forest paths lead to the Hoheleite. On the return journey, there are views of a picturesque railway viaduct spanning the Jossa valley. The river, meadow and forest paths, and the view of the viaduct give the route a series of distinct landscape impressions.
The type and stated length of each route are especially useful when comparing the two: the “Pearls of the Jossa” is a cycle route of about 33 kilometres, while the “Jossa-Sinn-Blick” is a 5.3-kilometre Spessart Trail. This lets you take the different route profiles into account when planning.
Nature and the Kneipp facility
The “Sinnwiesen” nature reserve extends through Hesse from Sinntal-Altengronau to Sinntal-Jossa. These places mark the extent of the protected area, which is not limited to Jossa. Together with Jossa’s location in the Spessart Nature Park, this gives you an insight into the natural landscape surrounding the town.
The Kneipp facility is located in the “In den Joßwiesen” recreational area in Jossa, Spessartgrund. If you are planning a visit, check for current information about the facility beforehand. This way, you can include this local place to relax in your plans without confusing it with the longer cycling and hiking routes.
A historic highlight in Jossa
The Protestant church in Jossa also offers a tangible link to the town’s history: its cornerstone was laid on 2 May 1909, and it was dedicated in 1910. The laying of the cornerstone and the dedication are two distinct historical milestones that help place the church’s history in context. If you are interested in culture while travelling, these dates add a clearly dated local point of interest to your exploration of Jossa.
