Castle ruins, therapeutic climate trails, a spa park and baths give you a range of themes for your stay in Königstein im Taunus. You can visit historic sites and scenic viewpoints, or choose between an approximately 90-minute guided tour of the town and castle and marked hiking trails. The differences between a guided tour, a circular trail and a viewpoint can help you decide what to focus on during your visit.

Castles and History

Falkenstein Castle Ruins, also known as Neu-Falkenstein Castle, were built in the 14th century by the Lords of Bolanden-Falkenstein beside the older Nürings Castle and were first mentioned in 1364. The ruins offer sweeping views across the Rhine-Main Plain. The keep of Königstein Castle Ruins is a medieval defensive tower about 34 metres high. The two ruins therefore offer different historical points of interest and views.

An approximately 90-minute guided tour of Königstein takes you on a walk through the spa park and town centre and up to the castle ruins. The tour covers their eventful history, other sights and Königstein’s development into a therapeutic climate resort. If you plan to join the tour, check the current date and any registration requirements. The Königstein Knights’ Tournament takes place every year on the weekend after Ascension Day on the grounds of Königstein Castle; the specific event dates may vary.

Spa Park, Baths and Views

The spa park is directly adjacent to the town centre, pedestrian zone and town hall. The Kurbad has an indoor pool heated to 29°C and a 32°C panoramic outdoor pool with views of Königstein Castle. As opening arrangements may change, check current operating hours before your visit.

Königstein outdoor pool is at the end of Forellenweg. It retains the style of 1920s lidos while also being equipped with modern technology. The facilities include a large sunbathing lawn and a generous range of recreational amenities. As the outdoor pool operates seasonally, check its opening hours before your visit.

The 32-metre-high Hardtberg Tower stands at 409 m above sea level between the spa town of Königstein and the district of Mammolshain. From there, views extend across the Taunus slopes and the Rhine-Main Plain, including the Frankfurt skyline, as well as to the castles of Königstein, Falkenstein and Kronberg. Viewpoints and castle ruins are distinct destinations, while the spa park is directly adjacent to the town centre.

Hiking Trails and Nature Reserves

Twelve of the 34 therapeutic climate circular trails in the Hochtaunus Therapeutic Climate Park start from five trailheads in Königstein. The park stretches between Königstein and the Großer Feldberg across around 20 km² and includes approximately 180 km of surveyed therapeutic climate hiking trails. These figures describe a larger network; the twelve circular trails starting in Königstein are the specific local point of access.

Therapeutic Climate Hiking Trail Königstein 1 (KS1) starts at the Kurbad trailhead, runs along the Falkensteiner Hain nature reserve within the town and connects the town centre with the district of Falkenstein. The 3-Castles Trail follows a different route: it starts at Königstein Castle, passes the Kurbad and enters the Falkensteiner Burghain nature reserve. It is a 11.70 km, moderately difficult circular trail. This lets you choose between a route connecting the town centre and a district, and a longer circular route rated as moderately difficult.

Getting to the Trails and Castle Ruins

You can reach the 3-Castles Trail via Königstein station on the RB12 or via the Königstein, Stadtmitte and Königstein, Friedhof bus stops, which are served by several bus routes. Check the timetables before travelling. Paid parking is available at the town hall and Luxemburger Schloss; from either location, Königstein Castle Ruins are about a five- to ten-minute walk away. As parking regulations may change, it is also worth checking the latest information before travelling.

For planning purposes, these offer distinct options in terms of time and activity: the guided tour is listed as taking about 90 minutes, while the 3-Castles Trail is described by its length and difficulty level. If you would rather focus on viewpoints or the baths, the Hardtberg Tower, Kurbad and outdoor pool offer additional, separate themes for your visit.
