In Seehausen am Staffelsee, Lake Staffelsee, hiking opportunities and the town’s rich history come together. If you’re looking for hotels in Seehausen, you can plan your trip around the things that interest you most: time by the lake, a walk or the town’s churches and reverse-glass painting. The following destinations and route descriptions give you specific places to start.

Lake Staffelsee and the Lido

Lake Staffelsee is a well-known warm-water swimming lake. In midsummer, water temperatures range from 22 to 26°C. The lake has seven islands. Together with the lido, they shape the activities around the lake: swimming, discovering its distinctive number of islands and following trails around the lake.

Seehausen Lido has a large sunbathing lawn, a café terrace and a gently sloping beach more than 300 metres long. Its facilities include both plenty of space to lie in the sun and a long stretch of gently sloping beach. Water temperatures refer to midsummer, an important seasonal detail when planning your trip.

Circular Trails and Finding Your Way Around

The Lake Staffelsee circular trail starts in Seehausen and is 20.5 kilometres long. Another route description covers a circuit of Lake Staffelsee on a signposted, 22-kilometre circular hiking trail: in summer, you can complete the route on foot or by bike. When planning, it’s worth noting the details of each route: one is described by its starting point in Seehausen and its length, while the lake circuit is also described by its season, signage and the option of cycling it.

For a walk through the village, there are hiking information boards and maps. Sights and themes along this village walk include St. Mauritius Chapel, Rieden Castle and the legend of the White Lady of Buchau Island. As you find your way around the village, you’ll encounter both specific landmarks and a local legend. Seehausen’s hiking options also include meditation trails with a spiritual focus.

Churches, Chapels and Reverse-Glass Painting

The building history of St. Michael’s Church is linked to Wörth Island: the church in Seehausen am Staffelsee was built with stones from the former island church on Wörth, which was demolished in 1773/1774. Prince-Bishop Wenzelslaus consecrated St. Michael’s in 1782. In 1838, St. Simpert Island Chapel was also founded on Wörth Island in the Neo-Romanesque style, replacing the demolished monastery church. The two building histories are linked to the island in different ways: in one case, as the source of the building materials; in the other, as the chapel’s location.

You’ll find more chapels in the outlying districts: Mauritius Chapel in Riedhausen dates back to the founding of the settlement and has 15th-century wall paintings. St. Peter and Paul in Rieden stands right next to Rieden Castle, dates from the 15th century and has a 17th-century high altar. The details about Riedhausen and Rieden offer two different points in time from which to explore the local religious architecture.

The Staffelsee Museum covers reverse-glass painting. With the Gege and Noder painter dynasties, Seehausen was an important centre for this art form. If you’re interested in local history, this topic complements the churches and chapels with a local artistic tradition. The lake and lido, hiking trails and cultural history offer different ways to shape your stay in Seehausen am Staffelsee.
