Wallgau combines a distinctive church interior with nature and a range of activities. The Isar River shapes the landscape; along the Finz, the Fairy Tale Trail offers its own themed experience. Cross-country skiing, a bike tour and mini golf round out the options as you plan your trip.

St. Jakob Parish Church and the Way of St. James

In the preserved choir of St. Jakob Parish Church in Wallgau, you can admire a net-ribbed vault. The choir’s central window features tracery. These are two distinct details of the church interior: the design of the vault and that of the window.

The Isar–Loisach–Leutascher Ache–Inn Way of St. James begins at the same parish church. The described stage leads to Porta Claudia in Leutascher Schanz; an extension continues to Oberleutasch. The church and pilgrimage route therefore share a starting point but have different focuses: the choir invites you to notice architectural details, while the route continues as a pilgrimage trail. If you are planning the stage, check transport details and conditions in advance.

The Isar, the Finz and distinctive trails

The Isar flows past Wallgau and is considered a pristine wild river there, with unique flora and fauna. Along the Finz, the Fairy Tale Trail features familiar characters such as Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood. The trail is designed as a woodland walk for the whole family, with play stations and places to sit in addition to the fairy-tale stops.

A small waterfall lies beside the caves. It trickles into a pool, from where the water continues into the Finzbach. Another trail leads from Wallgau town centre to a hollowed-out rock in Witter, known as Bear Cave. The natural attractions therefore differ: at the caves, the focus is on the flow of water; at Bear Cave, it is on the rock and the path from the centre.

Cross-country skiing, cycling and mini golf

Wallgau has an extensive network of cross-country ski trails. Trail conditions vary by season, so check them before planning your outing. For cycling, there is the Kleine Seentour, which starts at the car park by the Haus des Gastes in Wallgau. Conditions on this route can also vary by season.

The 12-hole mini-golf course is right next to the Haus des Gastes. Equipment is available during the opening hours of the Bayerische Stube. When planning, the main difference between these activities is their conditions: cross-country skiing and cycling are seasonal, while mini-golf equipment is available only during the Bayerische Stube’s opening hours.

More things to discover in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The wider destination of Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers more cultural and natural attractions. The Partnach Gorge was declared a natural monument in 1912 and opened to visitors. Visitors can walk between towering rock walls and experience the water rushing below them. Another cultural stop is the Richard Strauss Institute: it is housed in the historic Villa Christina in Partenkirchen’s spa gardens and contains a permanent exhibition about Strauss’s life and work.

Wank, at 1,780 metres and Partenkirchen’s local mountain, is ideal for leisurely hikes with far-reaching views. The Wank cable car runs directly from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the summit; its operation is subject to the relevant conditions. The Lüftlmalerei murals on house façades can also be discovered on walks through Garmisch-Partenkirchen. These attractions offer different experiences: the Partnach Gorge combines nature and history, the institute and façade paintings represent culture, and Wank offers mountain hikes with far-reaching views.
