When looking for a hotel in Farchant, it helps to decide in advance which local themes you want to shape your stay. Waterfalls and forests, architectural history, traditional customs and a seasonal winter sports option offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Experience waterfalls and forest

The Kuhflucht Waterfalls consist of three cascades with a total drop of about 270 metres. The Königsweg in the Kuhflucht Nature and Recreation Park, renovated in 2023, leads to the waterfalls. Several viewing platforms offer views of the Kuhfluchtgraben watercourse. This route therefore focuses in particular on the sequence of cascades and the course of the water.

The forest discovery trail in the Nature and Recreation Park has a different focus. Information stations explore the subject of forests; activities include a balancing tree, forest school, jumping pit and tree telephone. The park therefore offers two distinct themes: the Königsweg focuses on the watercourse and cascades, while the discovery trail focuses on forest knowledge and hands-on activities. You can consider which of these experiences you would like to prioritise when planning your trip.

Local history and a trail with stations

The parish church of St. Andreas in Farchant was built in 1728/29 by Munich Baroque master builder Johann Mayr. Its high altar dates from 1779. The construction date and the altar represent two different historical milestones.

The Way of Healing is a trail in Farchant with 15 stations. Its first station is at the Spielleiten playground; from there, the trail follows the edge of the forest to Burgrain. Each station has an image panel and a supplementary text panel. The starting point, route and destination give the trail a clear spatial sequence, while the panels identify each station with an image and text.

Traditional customs, puzzles and winter sports

Traditional brass-band music, Schuhplattler dancing, finger wrestling and Goaßlschnalzen whip cracking are part of living tradition at the forest festivals in Farchant. Event dates vary. If you would like to combine your trip with a forest festival, check the dates when planning.

For the puzzle hunt, a flyer resembling a small treasure map shows various places in the village where you can solve puzzles. This connects place names and locations with activities, rather than focusing on a single attraction. When snow conditions are suitable, the Am Ried ski slope offers good conditions especially for children, young people and beginners, and is groomed daily. Grooming is explicitly dependent on snow conditions, so plan a winter sports visit with the current conditions in mind.

More things to see in the wider Garmisch-Partenkirchen destination

The wider Garmisch-Partenkirchen destination also offers its own natural and cultural attractions. In the Partnach Gorge, visitors can walk between imposing rock walls and experience the water rushing below. The gorge was declared a natural monument and opened to visitors in 1912.

The Richard Strauss Institute is located in the historic Villa Christina in Partenkirchen’s spa gardens. It houses a permanent exhibition about Strauss’s life and work. For mountain hikes, the 1,780-metre-high Wank is described as a destination for leisurely walks with long-distance views; the Wank cable car takes visitors directly from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the summit. Cable car operations are subject to the applicable operating conditions. These examples belong to the wider Garmisch-Partenkirchen destination and should be distinguished from the attractions described in Farchant.
