Wasserburg am Inn lies on a peninsula and is surrounded by the Inn on seven-eighths of its perimeter. The Inn and the steep bank opposite frame the medieval Old Town and shape its panorama. Colorful Gothic houses and arcades define the look of the Old Town. To help you find your way during your stay, these features can be linked to specific cultural and route-related themes: local history, a museum, a circular hike or a cycling loop each offer a different focus.

The Old Town and traces of history

A castle was built in Wasserburg am Inn in the 12th century. The small town hall chamber contains frescoes dating from 1564. The castle and frescoes thus offer two points of reference from different periods in the town’s history. The Wasserburg Beer Catacombs add another perspective, showing how Kellerberg was used in the past: they form a system of vaults and passageways dug deep into the hill, where beer was once stored. Unlike the castle and town hall chamber, the focus here is on the underground complex and its use for storage.

Wasserburg Museum: themes and building

The Wasserburg Museum spans a broad period of time and covers a wide range of individual topics. Across four floors, it displays around 8,000 exhibits and covers 52 individual themes, from prehistory and early history to 19th-century bourgeois life. These include the history of the patrician families and shipping on the Inn. Since 1938, the museum has been housed at Herrengasse 15, a Gothic building in the Inn-Salzach style with an arcaded courtyard. A visit offers a glimpse inside historic houses in Wasserburg’s Old Town. The exhibition’s broad historical span distinguishes it from the individual buildings and dates found in the Old Town. Tailored guided tours and programs on the various exhibition themes are available on request for all age groups.

Exploring on foot or by bike

The circular hike along the Innleiten runs along the high bank and loops around half of the Old Town. The Wasserburg Loop to Attel follows a different route: it starts in the Old Town, passes the Innstaustufe bird sanctuary and continues along a footpath of about 6.5 kilometers through the Inn floodplains to Attel. This distinguishes a half-loop around the Old Town from a route ending in Attel; the approximate length of 6.5 kilometers refers to the loop to Attel.

The Wasserburg Cycling Loop has different features: it is well signposted in both directions, mostly paved, with short gravel sections and frequent but moderate climbs. For orientation, you can consider the walking routes by their course and destination, while the cycling route is characterized by its signage, surface and climbs.

More to explore in the wider Rosenheim destination

In the wider Rosenheim destination, the museum in Amerang Castle offers insights into castle architecture and the history of the noble family. The Amerang Farmhouse Museum of the District of Upper Bavaria showcases farmhouses, craft buildings and technical installations from the Chiemgau region. The two museums have different focuses: castle architecture and noble history on the one hand, and rural buildings and technical installations on the other.

The Amerang Open-Air Museum offers tailored guided tours and programs for groups. These offerings may change, and arrangements may need to be made in advance. The moorland nature trail between Amerang and Halfing, established in 2010, is also part of this regional exploration. It explains how the moorland landscape formed after the Ice Age, as well as the native wildlife and plant life.
