Rimsting connects Lake Chiemsee with Ratzinger Höhe and offers a range of themes to help you plan your trip: views and landscapes, trails of varying lengths, and historical and cultural destinations. The municipality stretches in terraces from the western shore of Lake Chiemsee, with Schafwaschener Bay, to the 693-metre-high Ratzinger Höhe. This makes the lakeshore and the higher elevations equally important when finding your bearings.

Lake Chiemsee, the bay and the views

Above Rimsting lies Ludwigshöhe, a viewpoint popular with many painters and photographers. From there, the view extends across the Bavarian Sea to Frauenchiemsee, Herrenchiemsee and Krautinsel, as well as to the panorama of the Chiemgau Alps. The viewpoint brings together several of the landscape features that define Rimsting, though each destination offers a different kind of experience: at the lake, the focus is on the lakeshore landscape; at Ludwigshöhe, it is on the expansive views.

Rimsting’s natural swimming area is on Schafwaschener Bay, directly beside the Lake Chiemsee circular route and cycle path. The facilities include a kiosk and an e-bike charging station. If you plan to use these facilities during your visit, check their current availability in advance. This is especially useful if your stay depends on a particular service being available on site.

Choose trails by length and theme

The geology trail starts at Rimsting’s St. Nicholas parish church. It is around five kilometres long and takes about two hours. Along the way, rocks of various sizes and types are displayed. The trail thus combines a manageable distance with a clear geological theme. Its approximate length and duration give you a practical guide for planning your day.

The Ratzinger Höhe experience trail starts at the free car park by Rimsting church, where signs featuring the trail’s special symbol begin as well. The route is about ten kilometres long and passes through dark forests and sunny flower meadows, with 14 stops along the way. It was designed for families and is suitable for children aged five and over. At roughly twice the length of the geology trail, it is a different option if you want to cover more ground and visit the stops along the way.

Another option is the easy circular route to Lake Chiemsee. Its 6.3 kilometres take you through the village of Rimsting and to its lakeside beach facilities; the stated duration is one hour and 47 minutes. Compared with the geology trail’s approximately two hours, the indicated time is slightly shorter. Here, the distance, duration and character of the trail give you different points of reference, so proximity to the lake is not the only factor in your choice.

Two more routes are available for longer outings. The 16-kilometre Orchard and Culture Trail runs from Bad Endorf through Rimsting to Prien and is lined with around 300 different fruit trees. The Priental river landscape is a 36.7-kilometre hiking route with several possible starting points; the documented route runs from Aschau to Rimsting. Both routes cover more ground than the trails that start at Rimsting church. No walking time is specified for either route.

Church history and an annual tradition

St. Nicholas parish church is also a distinctive starting point in Rimsting. Its high altar and pulpit once stood in the collegiate church on Herrenchiemsee. Both were acquired for the Rimsting church after secularisation in 1803. This historical connection links the church’s furnishings to Herrenchiemsee without equating the objects’ significance today with their former location.

A recurring annual event is the Christkindl salute by Rimsting’s ceremonial firing club: it takes place every year on 24 December at Ludwigshöhe. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the specific event details in advance. This distinguishes the annual date from the arrangements for each individual event.

Culture in the wider Rosenheim travel destination

The wider Rosenheim travel destination also offers distinctive cultural and nature-related attractions in Amerang. The museum at Amerang Castle provides insights into castle architecture and the history of the noble family. The Amerang Farmhouse Museum, run by the Upper Bavaria District, showcases farmhouses, craft buildings and technical installations from the Chiemgau region. The Amerang Open-Air Museum offers private tours and group activities; advance arrangements may be necessary, and offers may change.

Another area of focus is the moorland nature trail between Amerang and Halfing, established in 2010. It explains how the moorland landscape formed after the Ice Age and explores the local flora and fauna. These themes belong to the wider Rosenheim travel destination, not to Rimsting’s local features. Together with the trails, views and historical connections found locally, they give you a range of themes to consider when planning your stay.
