In Kiefersfelden, hiking trails with different themes and the Inn ferry to Tyrol take centre stage. The Kieferer Energy Hiking Trail focuses on energy generation, while the route through the GieĂźenbach Gorge links specific stops from the town centre to the Schopperalm. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these themes can help you plan excursions to suit your interests.

Energy and Nature on the Hiking Trail

At 23 stations, the Kieferer Energy Hiking Trail shows how the health resort of Kiefersfelden has responsibly and sustainably harnessed its abundant water, forest resources and solar energy for over 500 years. The trail brings together energy generation and local nature as a connected theme. The blue section includes Kiefersfelden’s smallest, largest and oldest hydropower plants. Each of the three plants uses a different technology—their size, age and technology offer different points of comparison.

The other stations also bring the theme to life through specific features. Adults and children can discover energy snails, hidden channels, power plant turbines, weirs, a water reservoir and a water playground. Bavaria’s largest waterwheel and the Gießenbach Gorge are also among the trail’s highlights. Technical installations and nature themes sit side by side, rather than the route focusing on just one type of energy generation.

A Route Through the GieĂźenbach Gorge

The Kiefersfelden–Gießenbach Gorge–Schopperalm hiking trail starts in the town centre and follows the Kieferbach. Along the way, it passes Bavaria’s largest waterwheel and goes through the Gießenbach Gorge to the Schopperalm. Unlike the Energy Hiking Trail, this route focuses on the journey between these stops. Please note that the Gießenbach Gorge is closed seasonally, and check whether it is accessible before setting out.

Take the Inn Ferry to Tyrol

For a different kind of excursion, the Inn ferry connects Kiefersfelden with Ebbs/Eichelwang in Tyrol. Made from larch wood using traditional craftsmanship, the ferry is 11 m long and 2.80 m wide. It can carry 12 passengers as well as bicycles. As service availability may vary, check the current timetable when planning your trip.

Culture in the Wider Rosenheim Destination

In the wider Rosenheim destination, the Museum at Amerang Castle offers insights into castle architecture and the history of the noble family. The Amerang Farmhouse Museum, run by the Upper Bavaria district, features farmhouses, craft buildings and technical installations from the Chiemgau region. The Amerang Open-Air Museum offers individual guided tours and group activities. As visitor services may change and arrangements may be required, it is best to check the current options in advance.

The Moorland Nature Trail, created in 2010 between Amerang and Halfing, is also in the wider Rosenheim destination. It explains how the moorland formed after the Ice Age and which animals and plants are native there. The moorland landscape and nature interpretation thus add another theme to Amerang’s castle, agriculture and craftsmanship attractions.
