Brannenburg brings together art along the route, pilgrimage history and weather-dependent outdoor activities. You can plan your visit to the Artists’ Trail by considering its stops, elevation gain and approximate walking times; the Biber and the routes exploring millstone history offer other thematic highlights. In winter, the Riesenberg cross-country ski trail is an additional option, depending on conditions. This lets you tailor your choice to your cultural interests, the time available for a tour and the season.

The Artists’ Trail and planning your time

The Artists’ Trail features 13 stops, where works of art highlight distinctive features of nature. It is 11.7 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 1,200 metres. The approximate times given are 3¾ hours uphill and 3¼ hours downhill. These separate walking-time estimates give you a concrete reference for planning your day. The Artists’ Trail starts at the valley station of the Wendelstein cog railway and is one of five themed trails in the joint Wendelstein-Streifzüge project.

Pilgrimage history at the Biber

The early Baroque pilgrimage church of St. Mary Magdalene on the Biber in Brannenburg dates back to the construction of a small church in 1628/29, which was consecrated in 1636. The Stations of the Cross near the church were added in 1733/1736. In summer, the former pilgrimage church offers views of the Riesenkopf and Maiwand.

Cultural trails and millstone history

At various stops, the Brannenburg cultural walk tells visitors about the beginnings of Degerndorf’s industrial history and the extraction of millstones from the 9th century onwards. The geology of Nagelfluh conglomerate is also explored at the so-called Biberstein. Three quarrying companies on the Biber in Brannenburg are taking part in a project featuring displays and information boards about Nagelfluh blocks, millstone quarrying, wedge splitting and stone-sawing techniques. The Biberrundweg and the Nußdorfer Mühlenweg in Brannenburg are also part of the project about the millstone quarries in the Inn Valley.

Hiking and winter activities

The free Erlach hiking car park is on the outskirts of Brannenburg, in the district of Milbing, and is a starting point for hikes to the Riesenkopf and into the Wendelstein area. The Riesenberg cross-country ski trail is at the foot of the Riesenkopf. When snow and weather conditions are suitable, it is regularly groomed for classic cross-country skiing and skating over a distance of about 10 kilometres between Brannenburg and Flintsbach am Inn. As grooming depends on conditions, it is worth checking before planning a winter outing. Snowshoeing is another way to experience the winter landscape; specific conditions depend on the weather.

Culture in the wider Rosenheim destination

The wider Rosenheim destination offers further cultural attractions in Amerang. The museum in Amerang Castle provides insights into the castle’s architecture and the history of the noble family. The Amerang Farmhouse Museum, run by the District of Upper Bavaria, showcases farmhouses, craft buildings and technical installations from the Chiemgau region. The open-air museum offers individual guided tours and group activities; advance arrangements may be required for group activities. Established in 2010, the moor nature trail between Amerang and Halfing explains how the moorland landscape formed after the Ice Age and introduces the local flora and fauna.
