Discover Kochel a. See
Accommodation in Kochel am See
Kochel a. See can be explored through specific experiences centered on art, water and trails. At the Franz Marc Museum, works by the Blue Rider artists are shown alongside modern and contemporary art. There is also an open-air sculpture park, boat trips on Lake Kochel and tours with different starting points and landscapes. These differences can help you tailor your stay to the themes that interest you most.
Franz Marc Museum and boat trip
The Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See displays works by Franz Marc and his fellow Blue Rider artists in dialogue with modern and contemporary art. The museum’s sculpture park brings art and nature together in the open air. A visit to the museum can therefore also include viewing art outdoors.
From Easter to October, the motor vessel Herzogstand serves the Franz Marc Museum landing stage. During these months, you can combine a boat trip around the lake with a museum visit. During the trip on Lake Kochel, passengers can visit lakeside attractions such as the Franz Marc Museum and the Walchensee Hydroelectric Power Station. If you are planning this combination for a particular day, check the timetable in advance.
Trails along the Loisach and Lake Kochel
The Loisach-Moos loop starts at Kochel a. See station, first leading to the Loisach bridge and then along a flat fitness trail beside the Loisach. From there, you can enjoy a view across the Kochelseemoor, a habitat for numerous plant and animal species. The trail also has exercise stations. The Short Loop also follows a flat path along the Loisach, but passes meadows and fields. On the return to Kochel, clear weather offers views of Jochberg, Herzogstand and Heimgarten.
The Felsenweg Trail offers a different perspective on the landscape. It leads from Kochel a. See station along Lake Kochel to the Walchensee Hydroelectric Power Station in the Altjoch district, then follows the scenic Felsenweg trail along the lakeshore. The path is cut into a 300 m-high cliff on the south shore. For the return to Kochel, you can take a motorboat on Lake Kochel or the MVV bus. Before setting out, check whether the return journey works for your travel date.
Bike tours with different destinations
The 47.97 km Kunstschleife (Art Loop) starts at the Franz Marc Museum and follows the cycle path towards Schlehdorf, continuing through Großweil to the Schloßmuseum in Murnau. The route thus connects a museum at the starting point with another at the destination. The e-mountain bike tour to the Berggasthaus Herzogstand has a different focus: it starts at Kochel a. See station and heads towards Lake Walchen. The Berggasthaus Herzogstand is at an elevation of 1,575 m. When choosing between the two tours, the Kunstschleife’s connection to museums or the named destination at Herzogstand may be the deciding factor.
Getting your bearings locally
