Miesbach combines a small old town with cultural highlights and trails on Stadlberg. You can choose a focus for your stay: the weekly market and town centre, traditional dress and art, or a hike. The differences below can help you choose activities to suit your interests and available time.

Market Square and Old Town

Miesbach’s market square is a special attraction in the small old town, with its squares, winding lanes and small shops. The market square, which is protected as an architectural ensemble, is also the setting for the Green Market: it takes place every Thursday from 06:30 to 13:00. If Thursday falls on a public holiday, the market is held on the preceding Wednesday. Keep this earlier date in mind when planning your visit. There is an e-bike charging station right by the maypole in the market square. Check its condition on site before relying on it.

Culture, Guided Tours and Food

Original Miesbach traditional dress is a special cultural heritage of which the town is proud. In the Portiunkula Church, frescoes by Alois Dirnberger, dating from 1823 to 1897, depict biblical scenes and the life of Saint Francis. Traditional dress and sacred art therefore offer different ways to engage with Miesbach’s culture.

The MIESBACHER KULtouren are guided town tours of Miesbach for groups with special interests. The Miesbacher GENUSStouren combine a pleasant stroll with a culinary journey featuring regional specialities and international dishes in selected shops, cafés and fashionable bars and restaurants. The tours thus differ in their focus: special interests for groups on the one hand, and culinary discoveries on the other.

Miesbach’s public baths are also among the oldest in the region. An account from 1879 described the crowds of summer visitors and their preference for the surrounding lakes. The baths are therefore part of a historical account of summer holidays in the region.

Culture in the wider Miesbach destination

In the wider Miesbach destination, the Waitzinger Keller cultural centre hosts opera, operetta, musicals, cabaret, concerts, children’s events, traditional events and exhibitions throughout the year. If you are travelling to attend a performance or event, check the current programme.

With a core collection of more than 3,000 objects, the Miesbach Local History Museum presents the natural and cultural landscape of the Oberland. The collection includes examples of Miesbach furniture painting, religious folk art from the Miesbach pilgrimage era, and tools and equipment from guilds and crafts, homes and farms. It also includes a farmhouse parlour, a shoemaker’s workshop and a hatmaker’s workshop. The collection therefore offers a range of insights into crafts, everyday life and regional culture.

Routes for different time budgets

The Mindfulness Mountain Trail follows a route of about 3 kilometres over Stadlberg. At seven stations, mindfulness prompts encourage visitors to activate all five senses and experience nature and themselves more consciously. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

In the wider Miesbach destination, hiking routes can also be compared by length, duration and difficulty. The easy circular route to the former Schloß Wallenburg starts at Miesbach railway station, is 4.7 kilometres long and takes one hour and 15 minutes; there is an opportunity to stop for refreshments. The family-friendly, easy circular route through the “Untere Wies” from Miesbach covers 8.0 kilometres and takes about two hours and 15 minutes.

The also family-friendly Miesbach Stadlberg Circular Route is of moderate difficulty, 8.1 kilometres long and estimated to take two hours and 30 minutes. It starts at Habererplatz, right next to the town square; there is an opportunity to stop for refreshments. The easy “By Train to the Mountains” route offers a different kind of walk: it leads from Miesbach railway station via Agatharied to Schliersee, is 8.6 kilometres long and takes about two hours. There is also an opportunity to stop for refreshments on this route. As route information may be updated, check the details again before your hike.

The broader setting is the Tegernsee Schliersee Alpine Region: throughout the district of Miesbach, it offers mountains, lakes and opportunities for hiking, cycling, winter sports and water sports. This extends the choice beyond the town centre and its cultural attractions to a range of activities across the region.
