Großkarolinenfeld combines church and local history with cycling tours. These highlights are clearly distinguishable for planning your trip: the architectural history ranges from the Protestant Carolinenkirche to the Leonhard Chapel, built in 2001; for cycling, there are several routes, including the Via Julia and the “Around Rosenheim” routes. You can therefore tailor your stay to culture, exercise, or a combination of both.

Churches and local history

The Protestant Carolinenkirche was the first Protestant church in Old Bavaria. The Neoclassical building was constructed under the direction of master builder Johann Karmann from Rosenheim and consecrated on October 13, 1822. The church complex also includes the Protestant rectory, built in 1805 with a prayer room. This room was used for church services and lessons; after the church was built, it was used only as a classroom.

Another historical trace is the small Baroque organ in the Protestant Karolinenkirche. It comes from the Catholic monastery church at Tegernsee and was first played in the Protestant Carolinenkirche on August 15, 1824. Its origins and first performance mark different stages in the instrument’s history.

The Catholic parish church “Zum kostbaren Hl. Blut Christi” was built in 1851. Its furnishings include an altarpiece by the artist Leo von Welden from Feilnbach and a Late Gothic Madonna. Leonhard and Magdalena Schlosser had the Leonhard Chapel built on Josef-Baumann-Straße in May 2001. Both churches and the chapel offer different points of interest if you are interested in architectural history and religious art.

Tattenhausen is also part of the municipality of Großkarolinenfeld. The Hl.-Kreuz-Kirche there was consecrated in 1196; its 800th anniversary of consecration was celebrated in 1996. This stop broadens the view of local history beyond the town of Großkarolinenfeld itself.

In the broader Rosenheim travel destination, two museums in Amerang offer different insights. The Museum at Amerang Castle provides information about castle architecture and the history of the noble family. The Amerang Farmhouse Museum of the District of Upper Bavaria features farmhouses, craft buildings, and technical installations from the Chiemgau region. Castle and aristocratic history, on the one hand, and rural buildings, crafts, and technology, on the other, are presented as distinct museum themes.

The Amerang open-air museum offers private guided tours and programs for groups. These visitor offerings may change; check in advance whether the desired option is available and whether arrangements are required. The Moorland Nature Trail, established in 2010 between Amerang and Halfing, offers a different focus. It explains how the moorland landscape formed after the Ice Age and introduces the native animal and plant life. The focus thus shifts from buildings and history to landscape formation and natural history.
