Wartmannsroth brings together three specific themes for planning your trip: circular hiking trails, a long distilling tradition and historic buildings in several districts. Depending on your interests, you can focus your time on a hike, culinary offerings or local history. Walking times, culinary experiences and architectural history give you different ways to plan your stay.

Circular Hiking Trails and Views

Ten different circular hiking trails run through the municipality of Wartmannsroth. Circular Hiking Trail 1 is 21.4 kilometers long, with a walking time of about seven hours. Its route passes through Wartmannsroth, Völkersleier, Heiligkreuz, Dittlofsroda and Waizenbach. The walking time makes clear that this route takes up a large part of the hiking day. Check local conditions before setting out.

Circular Hiking Trail 7 is 12.7 kilometers long and has an estimated walking time of about 4.5 hours. Compared with Circular Hiking Trail 1, its route is 8.7 kilometers shorter, and the walking time is around two and a half hours less.

Steinküppel in the Völkersleier district offers views of the Hochrhön and the nearby ridges of the Spessart. These two vistas make the viewpoint a distinct landscape feature alongside the hikes described in terms of walking time.

Distilling Tradition and Culinary Experiences

Since 2018, Wartmannsroth has been one of Bavaria’s 100 Genussorte (places of culinary excellence). The town is considered the birthplace of Rhön whisky: the traditional grain spirit Rhöndiesel was first refined there into Rhön whisky. The name Rhön whisky is thus linked to a specific local process.

In connection with the long distilling tradition, tastings, seminars and culinary tours are available throughout the year. If you would like to include one of these offerings in your stay, check the specific dates and providers in advance. The different formats offer several ways to explore Wartmannsroth’s culinary focus.

Architectural History in the Municipal Districts

The moated castle in Windheim was probably built in the 13th century and has always served as the residence of one branch of the von ThĂĽngen family. The moated castle in Waizenbach dates from the 16th century. These two named buildings, from different centuries, offer a glimpse into local history.

The churches, too, reflect different periods of construction. The Catholic church in Wartmannsroth has a chancel tower dating from the 15th or 16th century. In Windheim, the Juliusspital had a magnificent new church built in 1765/66 in place of the old one; its interior was created by sculptor Peter Wagner.

In Dittlofsroda, which belongs to the municipality, the Evangelical Lutheran church has a chancel tower dating from the 15th century and a nave from the 18th century. A chancel tower is a tower above the chancel; the nave is the main longitudinal space of a church. These two terms help distinguish the differently dated parts of the building in Dittlofsroda.
