Motten lies in the Rhön Nature Park on the state border between Hesse and Bavaria. When planning a stay, you can distinguish between two main focuses: the landscape and nature along the Der Mottner premium hiking trail, and local and commemorative history in Kothen and Werberg. This lets you decide in advance whether trails, observing nature and scenic views, or historic sites and exhibits should shape your stay.

Hiking and Landscapes Around Motten

On the Der Mottner premium hiking trail, forests, meadows and water alternate; historic boundary stones between Bavaria and Hesse line the route. These stones reflect the theme of the state border between Hesse and Bavaria, where the municipality of Motten is also located.

Der Mottner leads to a fish nature trail that provides information about the plants and animals around the Kleine Sinn. The trail also leads to the Pilsterfelsen geotope, which features a mineral spring, old weather crosses and a small biotope where beavers have made their home. The stops have different focuses: the nature trail draws attention to the plants and animals along the Kleine Sinn, while the Pilsterfelsen brings together the geotope, weather crosses and biotope.

An observation tower stands at the summit of the Mottener Haube, offering views across the Rhön Mountains. While the tower focuses your gaze on the mountain landscape, Der Mottner highlights the changing landscape features along the route. The observation tower thus offers a different perspective from the succession of forests, meadows and water along the hiking trail.

You can start the Der Mottner at four locations: the parking lot at the watershed between Motten and Kothen, the village square in Motten, the hiking car park near the Pilsterfelsen in Kothen, or the centre of Speicherz. The starting points are therefore spread across Motten, Kothen and Speicherz. You can choose where to begin based on which of these places suits your plans.

Places of Remembrance and History in Kothen

The Werberger Stube, a museum and memorial to the resettled village of Werberg, has been located in the Kothen district since 1987. It displays salvaged objects from Werberg Church: the foundation stone, the tower cross, a bell and the baptismal font. Also on display are old vestments, historic photographs of Werberg, and farming equipment and tools.

The Kothen Historical Village Walk offers a different way to explore local history. Informative display boards provide insight into the village’s past. The volunteer-run project was launched to make the village’s varied history visible and tangible for people of all ages; it was carried out with the support of the municipality of Motten and the Brückenauer Rhönallianz.

The two historical attractions differ in what they focus on: the Werberger Stube commemorates the resettled village of Werberg and displays objects from its church, while the village walk focuses on Kothen’s past. You can choose based on which local history interests you most.
