Discover Hammelburg: Castle Views, Wine and City History
Accommodation in Hammelburg
Hammelburg combines history, winegrowing and outdoor activities. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Hammelburg, you can plan your trip around the themes that interest you most: Saaleck Castle and its history, wine trails, the Old Town, or opportunities for exercise and swimming. The different places and activities give you concrete ideas for planning.
Saaleck Castle and Views across the Saale Valley
The oldest parts of Saaleck Castle date back to the 12th century. The first vineyards of Fulda Abbey were cultivated from there, and the wines were stored in the castle’s cellars. This connects the site’s architectural history with the history of winegrowing. On clear days, the view from the imposing keep extends across the Saale Valley to the Rhön.
The terroir f at Ofenthaler Berg offers another view of Hammelburg. From here, you can look out over the Old Town, surrounded by walls and towers, towards the castle hill with Saaleck Castle, and across the hilly landscape of the Vorderer Rhön. The two viewpoints offer different perspectives: from the keep, the view sweeps across the Saale Valley to the Rhön, while at Ofenthaler Berg, the Old Town, castle and surrounding landscape come together.
Wine Trails and Guided Tours
The certified Weinlehrpfad Hammelburg wine trail is 5.8 km long. Along the way, you can learn about the close ties between the abbots of Fulda and Hammelburg, as well as the distinctive features of winegrowing in the Franconian Saale Valley. The Fränkischer Saale Weingenusswanderweg is a different proposition: at around 60 km long, it passes through Hammelburg and by Saaleck Castle. This lets you choose between a trail specifically devoted to wine and a longer route that passes through the town and by the castle.
The vineyards are also the focus of an adventure tour. Visitors walk through Hammelburg’s vineyards with local guides, enjoy views over the town and learn about local winegrowing. An Old Town tour, by contrast, explores traces of the town’s more than 1,300-year history and how winegrowing has shaped Hammelburg for centuries. The two tours bring together the themes of wine and city history in different ways.
Old Town, Museum and Church Music
A modern, interactive museum about “Bread and Wine” has been located in Hammelburg’s historic Herrenmühle since 1991. The exhibition was updated in 2017. The museum complements the trails and guided tours with a visit to an exhibition where bread and wine provide the shared theme.
A recurring cultural event is the HAMULissimo Church Music Days. They take place every two years over a two-week period in various churches in Hammelburg; admission is mostly free. As the program is tied to specific event dates, it is advisable to check the latest dates before planning your trip.
Cycling, Swimming and Local Specialties
The Thulbatalradweg is one option for a bike ride: it runs from Hammelburg to Oberthulba and is around 16 km long. If you would rather ride at a facility in town, the bike park in Hammelburg’s Mehrgenerationenpark has a professional course for practicing new stunts, as well as an asphalt pump track. The pump track is designed for mountain bikes, BMX bikes, scooters and other vehicles, and is also suitable for wheelchair sports.
The Saaletalbad at Hammelburg’s sports center includes a bright, open indoor swimming pool with a 25 m stainless-steel pool. There is a pool with a slide and play features for children. The indoor pool and sauna areas are also accessible. This makes the options at Saaletalbad quite different from activities on cycling routes and at the bike park.
A local specialty is the Hammelburger Dätscher: a triangular pastry made from savory rye bread dough and sprinkled with coarse salt and caraway seeds. The Schwab bakery in the heart of Hammelburg’s Old Town bakes the Dätscher fresh every day. A visit to the Old Town is also a chance to discover one of the town’s distinctive baking traditions.
