Get to know Westendorf through the Catholic parish church of St. Michael and its local club culture. The wider travel destination of the Ostallgäu also offers a different perspective on mountains, cultural attractions, and seasonal activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Westendorf, you can include local cultural interests and regional attractions as separate focuses in your travel plans.

Church and club life in Westendorf

The Catholic parish church of St. Michael in Westendorf was extended and renovated in 1966/67. The work was funded mainly by donations from the local community and voluntary labor. In 1979/80, the church underwent extensive exterior renovations.

Since its founding in 1921, the “Gennachtaler” traditional costume and local history association in Westendorf has been dedicated to preserving traditional costumes, folk dances, and Schuhplattler dancing. Its work thus puts local customs and the passing on of cultural traditions at its center. Together with the parish church, the association showcases different aspects of local cultural life.

The municipality's two brass bands give regular concerts. In the associated municipality, the Dösingen music association contributes to cultural life with New Year's serenades, annual and children's concerts, the “Blätzagraba,” and a wine festival. Festive processions for First Communion and Corpus Christi are also among the activities described.

Theater is also part of the cultural offering in the associated municipality: the Dösingen Theaterstube stages classic works with wit and humor. These include the dialect play “Das schwäbische Paradies,” based on Franz von Kobell's original version of Brandner Kaspar, as well as Ephraim Kishon's “Vaterschaftsprozess des Zimmermanns Joseph.” If you would like to include concert or theater dates in your travel plans, check the latest announcements.

The Ostallgäu as a regional setting

In the wider travel destination of the Ostallgäu, the mountains in the southwest of the district belong to the Vilser Gebirge range, while those in the southeast belong to the Ammergebirge range. At 2,082 meters, Hochplatte is the highest mountain in the Ostallgäu. The region's cultural offerings also cover a range of topics: Since July 12, 2025, Neuschwanstein Castle, together with Linderhof Palace, the King's House on Schachen, and Herrenchiemsee Palace, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles can only be visited on a guided tour.

The Ostallgäu offers further regional inspiration for cycling and hiking. The RadReiseRegion comprises routes that stretch across the entire Ostallgäu. Each route is 25 to 76 kilometers long, signposted throughout, and has its own theme. For hiking, the Ostallgäu has 32 local routes that showcase special treasures in nature and in its towns and villages.

The Forggensee cycling loop runs around Lake Forggensee. Covering more than 15 square kilometers, the lake is Bavaria's fifth-largest and Germany's largest reservoir. During the summer season, Forggensee boat trips run regularly; check the timetable when planning a specific visit. The region offers a choice of different interests, from trails and landscapes to seasonal boat trips.
