The Old Town, St. Mang and the High Castle are hallmarks of architectural and cultural history; Hopfen am See offers further ways to connect with the landscape, trails and water.

Old Town, St. Mang and the High Castle

Füssen’s Old Town has medieval lanes, an old town wall, Baroque churches and monasteries, as well as the High Castle. The parish church of St. Mang features numerous ceiling frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Saint Magnus. This makes it possible to discover buildings and works of art with a range of historical connections in the Old Town.

Regular guided tours of St. Mang include the carved choir stalls, the 1703 Jäger organ, the crypt and the burial vault. If you plan to join a tour, check the current dates in advance, as tour offerings and times may change.

The High Castle is known for its late-medieval illusionistic paintings on the courtyard façades and is considered one of the most important secular buildings of the German Late Gothic period. “Secular building” means a non-religious building; the term distinguishes the castle’s function from that of the Old Town’s churches and monasteries. The courtyard façades provide a specific architectural setting for the illusionistic paintings.

The former Benedictine monastery of St. Mang is also an important cultural site: the Baroque complex is among Germany’s nationally significant cultural monuments. The former monastery houses the Museum of the City of Füssen, with historic lutes and violins. It illustrates the individual steps involved in making a lute or violin. Children can try playing a decorated lute and listen to the sounds of other historic instruments. Check the current guided tour dates and visitor information for the museum before your visit.

Hopfen am See: landscape, circular trail and boats

Hopfen am See is a district of Füssen with a different focus. A designated landscape conservation area with rare plants and nesting sites for waterbirds extends around Hopfensee. These include great crested grebes, Eurasian coots, wild ducks and grey herons. Above the lake, the remains of the castle ruin are considered the oldest surviving stone castle in the Allgäu.

The flat Hopfensee circular trail is about seven kilometres long and invites you to enjoy a leisurely hike lasting 1.5 to 2 hours. This makes a walking tour a distinct part of travel planning in Hopfen. The approximate length, flat terrain and stated duration describe this circular trail.

Along the lakeside promenade, local boat rental operators hire out rowboats, pedal boats, stand-up paddleboards and kayaks. This lets you choose between the activities on offer at Hopfensee based on whether you would rather explore on foot or plan an activity on the water. Availability and boat rental arrangements may change; check in advance.

In the Ostallgäu: cycling route and boat trips on Forggensee

In the Ostallgäu, the Forggensee cycling loop runs around Forggensee. Forggensee boat trips operate regularly during the summer season. In the regional context, these offer two different options: a cycling route around the lake and a seasonal trip on the water. If you plan a boat trip, check the current timetable.
