Osterzell: Marian Grotto, Parish Barn and Natural Swimming Pool
Accommodation in Osterzell
Osterzell offers several different themes for a stay: places shaped by religion, theater and events at the parish barn, and a natural swimming pool with a playground. When looking for hotels in Osterzell, the reason for your trip may be decisive: would you like to focus mainly on culture and local history, plan time outdoors, or include both as themes for your trip? The local offerings differ in character and, in some cases, in their seasonal schedules.
Marian Grotto and Church History
Built in 1899, the Marian Grotto lies on the steep slope in Osterzell, on Grottensteige, and is a place of quiet and prayer. Religious traditions include regular May devotions and the annual candlelight procession to the grotto, held since the 1960s. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the dates in advance.
St. Stephen and Oswald Parish Church offers another historical point of reference: its origins are traced to a cell church built by Frankish monks in the mid-8th century, three kilometers east of the Marian cell in Stöttwang. The grotto and church thus represent different aspects of local religious history: the grotto as a place of devotion, and the church with its early founding history.
The Parish Barn as a Cultural Venue
The listed parish barn was formerly an agricultural building belonging to the castle and has been renovated. Since its inauguration on July 31, 1980, its hall, with a stage and gallery, has been used for cultural events, parties and celebrations; theater performances are also held there. The Bayr. Hiasl Osterzell Theater Association has a 100-year history.
When planning, distinguish between the hall’s long-term use and individual events: performances and celebrations each have their own dates. If theater is a deciding factor for you, check the current program before planning your stay around it.
Bible Garden, Natural Swimming Pool and Playground
The Osterzell Bible Garden combines biblical sayings with landscape architecture, artworks and plants. It is a place to pause and reflect, offering a quieter note than theater or a celebration at the parish barn. The combination of texts, landscaped grounds and artworks forms a distinct theme among Osterzell’s cultural sites.
The Osterzell natural swimming pool is a free, open-air bathing area without an enclosure. The water is biologically reprocessed with the help of a cleaning pond containing more than 500 reed plants. Check the pool’s seasonal operating period before your visit.
The public playground is right next to the natural swimming pool. For toddlers, it has a slide and spring riders; for teenagers, there are table-tennis tables and a foosball table. Since spring 2024, the playground area by the natural swimming pool has also had a free public drinking fountain. The bathing area, play facilities and drinking fountain are distinct amenities at this location.
Cycling and the Regional Setting
The Kleeblattrunde cycle route through Ostallgäu runs from Rettenbach am Auerberg roughly along the Hühnerbach stream to Bidingen and Osterzell. Route conditions may change; check them before setting out.
In the wider Ostallgäu destination, the Ostallgäu Cycling Travel Region also offers regional routes that extend across the entire area. The routes are each 25 to 76 kilometers long, signposted throughout and dedicated to their own theme. Ostallgäu also has 32 local hiking routes that showcase special natural and local treasures. These regional hiking opportunities and cycling routes complement Osterzell’s specific themes. When choosing a hotel, you can first decide whether you would like to focus your stay mainly on cultural sites, the natural swimming pool, or a cycling or hiking tour.
