Discover Kulmain: Hiking Trails, Churches and Armesberg
Accommodation in Kulmain
For a stay combining hiking and culture, Kulmain offers several specific points of interest. Circular trails use the town as a starting point or reference, while another hiking route leads via Zinst and Altensteinreuth to Armesberg. There is also the parish church in Kulmain and a cycling route that passes Armesberg. The routes differ in their circular layouts, intermediate stops and destinations.
Hiking trails around Kulmain
The Kulmainer Seenweg follows a loop: from Kulmain, it goes via Sommerheu and Altensteinreuth and back to Kulmain. Another circular route runs from Kulmain around Waldsee; a different loop goes around Kulmain and over Birkenbühl. The large municipal circular route leads via Unterwappenöst, Schwarzweiher, Witzlasreuth, Alm-Hofstetten and Lenau, returning to Kulmain. If you would rather head for a named destination than follow a loop back to your starting point, there is a hiking route via Zinst and Altensteinreuth to Armesberg. The options can therefore be distinguished by their routes and the places mentioned: the Seenweg connects Sommerheu and Altensteinreuth, while the large municipal circular route includes a different sequence of stops.
Churches and Armesberg
The parish church in Kulmain was probably built around 1150 and provides a historic landmark for the town. Another ecclesiastical highlight is at Armesberg: the pilgrimage church of the Holy Trinity stands at the summit, at an elevation of 731 metres, and can be visited there. The Kulmainer cycling route passes Armesberg. This means you can include the mountain in your plans both via the cycling route and as a destination to visit the pilgrimage church.
Culture in Tirschenreuth
In Tirschenreuth, the MuseumsQuartier offers a distinct cultural experience. Housed in a former monastery, it brings together the Upper Palatinate Fisheries Museum and six other specialised exhibitions. There, you can explore almost 1,000 years of fishing and fish-farming history and see local fish in four large aquariums. The MuseumsQuartier regularly hosts special exhibitions, lectures, readings and concerts. If an event is important to your stay, check the dates in advance.
The Fischhofpark in Tirschenreuth offers a different historical perspective: at its centre are the historic Fischhof Bridge and the Fischhof, which houses the district court. While the MuseumsQuartier brings together fisheries and exhibitions, these two historic buildings are the focus of the park.
Zoigl beer and carp in Tirschenreuth district
Zoigl beer and carp are two defining features of the Tirschenreuth district’s culinary identity. The district is best known for Zoigl, the signature beer of the Upper Palatinate Forest. It is also known for carp from the pond landscapes of the “Land of 1,000 Ponds”. These two themes offer different ways to explore regional food culture as part of your travel plans.
Plan your stay and find hotels
Kulmain’s routes differ in their loops and the intermediate stops mentioned; the MuseumsQuartier and Fischhofpark add a distinct cultural dimension. If special exhibitions or events are part of your plans, check the dates before travelling.
