Betzigau offers a variety of options to consider when planning your trip: cross-country ski trails with clear information about their length and difficulty, two seasonally groomed walking paths, and art by the stream. The Völk Chapel is also nearby, along the footpath from Betzigau via Heinzelberg to Stein.

Cross-country ski trails and winter paths

The Wolkenberg trail is 2.0 km long and moderately difficult. As a connecting trail, it runs from the B12 bridge to the Kempter Wald trail. The connecting trail from the Wolkenberg trail to the Moos trail is also 2.0 km long, moderately difficult, and has a gentle uphill section. The Moos trail itself is 10 km long and easy; it runs from the Wildpoldsried sports ground via Bogenried to Betzigau/Weiher. The difference in length is clear: two sections are each 2.0 km long, while the Moos trail covers 10 km. The difficulty ratings also differ: the connecting trails are moderately difficult, while the Moos trail is easy.

Grooming conditions may change, as can parking conditions at the Wolkenberg trail. Check both before setting out. Along the Leubas, a winter walking path and an energy trail are groomed in cooperation with the municipality of Wildpoldsried. Each path is approximately 10 km long and intended for pedestrians, with or without dogs. Grooming is seasonal, so it is worth checking current conditions before setting out. Both walking paths are approximately the same length, but differ in that one is designated as a winter walking path and the other as an energy trail.

Landscape and culture

The Allgäu foothills around Betzigau are part of the wider Oberallgäu travel region: a hilly landscape with a rural character, broad meadows, forests, streams and tucked-away little lakes. This landscape includes Notzenweiher, a reed-fringed bathing pond known as the Betzigau residents’ “home pond.” Open meadows and forests sit alongside small bodies of water that help shape the landscape.

Since 2004, artists have presented their works to a wide audience along the stream running through the municipality of Betzigau as part of KUNST AM BACH (ART BY THE STREAM). The stream is therefore both a local feature and the setting for a public art exhibition. The Völk Chapel lies above Bachtel, along the footpath from Betzigau via Heinzelberg to Stein; if you are planning your visit specifically around it, check whether the May devotions are still held. May devotions are held at the Völk Chapel; if you would like to plan your visit around one, check the current date. The brothers Roman and Manfred extensively renovated the chapel in 1997. Its location along the footpath and its renovation history give it a distinct cultural connection to the nearby area.
