Wiggensbach: Local History, Trails and Golf
Accommodation in Wiggensbach
When planning a trip to Wiggensbach, there are several themes to explore: local history and art at the WIZ information center, trails, golf and cheese-making. St. Pankratius Parish Church is another cultural point of interest. The activities vary in scale, from a 10 km Nordic walking trail to a route covering 274 kilometers in total.
Culture at the WIZ and St. Pankratius
The municipality of Wiggensbach’s local history collection is housed at the Wiggensbach Information Center, “WIZ.” Its themes range from geology and local history to rural homes, religious folk art and art treasures from the Gothic and Baroque periods, as well as crafts, commerce, agriculture and education. Nature, everyday life, religion and local work thus offer different ways to explore local history. The Wiggensbach Local History Museum grew out of the collection.
The WIZ also hosts exhibitions of oil, watercolor, acrylic and mixed-media paintings, as well as sculptures, photographs, craftwork and nativity scenes. The range spans painting, three-dimensional and photographic works, and exhibitions focused on arts and crafts or seasonal themes.
Another cultural point of interest is St. Pankratius Parish Church in Wiggensbach. It is considered Johann Georg Specht’s most significant independent work. This gives the church a specific connection to the town’s art history.
Nordic Walking and the Wiesengänger Route
A signposted Nordic walking trail starts at the market square in Wiggensbach and goes via Blender, Schmidsreute and Westenried before returning to Wiggensbach. Its stated length is 10 kilometers. The starting point, places along the way and return make the route easy to follow if you are looking for a walk with a clearly named starting point.
On a larger scale, the Wiesengänger Route covers 274 kilometers in total over 15 stages. The places named along the route include Marktoberdorf, Kaufbeuren, Bad Wörishofen, Ottobeuren, Bad Grönenbach, Altusried, Wiggensbach and Schmidsfelden; it continues as far as Eglofs. This means there are two very different distances to consider: the 10 kilometers of the Nordic walking trail and the total length of the Wiesengänger Route, designed to be completed over several days.
Golf Course and Kreuzberg
Golfclub Waldegg-Wiggensbach e. V. has a 27-hole course. It is described as Germany’s highest-altitude golf course and the country’s only mountain golf course. A special feature is the tee at hole 5, Kreuzberg: it sits at an altitude of 1,011 meters, is considered Germany’s highest-altitude tee and offers wide-ranging views. The 27 holes describe the size of the course; the altitude and views, by contrast, refer specifically to hole 5.
A Look at Cheese-Making
