When looking for a hotel in Burgberg in the Allgäu, it’s worth keeping your planned activities in mind. Local highlights include the castle ruins, the ore mines and their mining and geology connections, as well as trails for hikers and mountain bikers. The activities offer different ways to explore the area: from a mineral collection to guided visits to the tunnels, a hiking stage and a downhill run. This lets you plan your stay around the interests that matter to you.

Castle Ruins and Mining History

Burgberg Castle Ruins are located above the southern edge of the village and are among the oldest tower castles in the Allgäu. From 1992 to 1997, they were carefully secured with minimal intervention in the building fabric. Their historical context and the way they were secured offer different starting points for exploring the history of the village.

At the Erzgruben Burgberg museum village, the geology exhibition hut brings together two perspectives: it explores the history of mining in the Allgäu and the geology of the Allgäu Alps and the Grünten. The hut also houses a mineral collection featuring fossilized snails, shells and shark teeth. The scope ranges from regional mining history to rocks and fossils; the collection illustrates these topics through specific specimens.

For a different way to explore mining history, the discovery tour, led by a mine guide, takes you through nature to and into the historic tunnels of the Theresien and Anna mines. Helmets and lamps are used when entering the tunnels. The approximately 25-metre-long tunnel entrances lead into the original mining area. The two activities therefore offer different experiences: the exhibition hut brings together geology and a collection, while the tour leads to the tunnels and into the historic mining area.

Admission to the Erzgruben Burgberg museum village is free. As admission arrangements may change, check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Hiking and Cycling

Stage 08 of the Himmelsstürmer, a route in the Allgäu Hiking Trilogy, leads from Rettenberg over the Grünten and through a striking gorge to Burgberg. The Burgberg Family Hiking Trail has a different focus: it runs from the nature discovery station at the quarry to the HolzerPfad forest adventure trail, introducing children to the history of work in the mountain forest along the way. This topic is central to the family trail, while the Himmelsstürmer focuses on the stage route over the Grünten and the passage through the gorge. As routes may change, check the current route of the Himmelsstürmer stage before setting out.
