When looking for a hotel in Schwabhausen, specific local features can help you get a sense of the destination: the S2 S-Bahn line, historical traces around the church and inn, and sports and nature. Depending on whether you are planning your trip around transport, local history or leisure, these aspects offer different points of reference. The details below show which ones may be relevant to your own plans.

Getting here and choosing where to stay

Schwabhausen itself and the district of Arnbach are on the S2 S-Bahn line between Altomünster and Dachau. This makes the line a useful point of reference when choosing where to stay based on rail connections. Timetables and service patterns may change, so check the current connections before travelling if you are planning your journey or day around the S2.

Local history between church and inn

St. Michael in Schwabhausen is the parish church. The remains of a Celtic rampart lie northwest of the church and provide evidence of Celtic settlement. These remains are associated with Celtic settlement dating from around 500 to 15 BC.

Another historical connection leads to the former inn. The “Obern Tafern,” now the Gasthof zur Post in Schwabhausen, was once the most important stop for travellers in the town. A plaque at today’s “Zur Post” restaurant commemorates the official farewell to Pope Pius VI in Schwabhausen.

Sports and other activities

The sports facility at Jahnstraße 5 includes the “Heinrich-Loder-Halle” sports hall, a beach volleyball court, facilities for bowls and boccia, a soccer five-a-side pitch and a pump track.

There is also a life-size chessboard between the town hall and the market square. It was installed in 2018 and can be used free of charge without prior registration. You can get the chess-piece code from the municipal administration.

Nature through the seasons

Lapwings return to the municipality of Schwabhausen every year from February onwards. The males court females with spectacular display flights and their loud “kee-wit!” calls. During the breeding season, stay on the paths and avoid disturbing them.

A flower meadow is being created in the green corridor between Mohnblumenstraße and Blumenstraße. A total of 240 flower bulbs have been planted there, and daffodils, crocuses and snowdrops can be seen in spring. A field path leads into the Blumenviertel neighbourhood and ends at Kornblumenstraße.

More to explore in the Dachau destination

The Karlsfelder See offers another focus for outdoor activities in the Dachau destination. This 58.2-hectare recreation area lies directly beside the built-up area of northern Karlsfeld in the district of Dachau. It is used year-round for walking, jogging, cycling and relaxation.

Culture enthusiasts can explore different museums in Dachau. The Dachau District Museum displays exhibits on three floors covering settlement patterns, the town’s history, guilds and market rights, crafts and trade, everyday life, festive customs and popular religious culture. The Dachau Picture Gallery offers a different focus: its permanent collection features landscapes and genre paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
