Hilgertshausen-Tandern draws attention to trails, landscapes, and culture around the BesteGegendPfad. The Fahrtbachtal is a particular highlight: an extended version of the trail leads there, and an alternative route is also integrated into the valley. StreuobstErlebnis and Vollmairhaus add to the trail’s themes. When planning, it is worth keeping the different routes and their respective highlights in mind.

BesteGegendPfad and Fahrtbachtal

The BesteGegendPfad includes a six-kilometre circular trail. Its extended version leads into nature, to the Fahrtbachtal, and adds 2.5 kilometres to the route. This makes it a longer option than the circular trail alone. An alternative route on the BesteGegendPfad also leads to the Fahrtbachtal and is integrated into the trail. Check the signs locally if you plan to follow the extension.

The 6.6-hectare Fahrtbachtal lies within the Tandern project area and is the most important component of a biotope network. It is also a habitat for many birds and mammals. For visitors interested in landscapes and habitats, its ecological role and location along the trail are a notable highlight.

StreuobstErlebnis is also part of the BesteGegendPfad. The fruit-growing and gardening association created it on the compensation area of the fire station. Vollmairhaus adds another theme: it is one of the historic buildings along the route in Tandern. Nature, traditional orchards, and architectural history each bring their own distinctive accents to the trail.

More routes and cultural history

An extension of the Ilmtaltour leads from Jetzendorf via Hilgertshausen and Tandern to Altomünster railway station. It also includes a detour to the source of the Tanderner Ilm. If you plan to take this route, check the latest route information before setting off.

Daumillerberg lies in the area surrounding Tandern. In the 1950s and 1960s, it served as a ski-training hill and was a “cult spot” in Rosenmüller’s film “Beste Gegend.” This also connects the landscape around Tandern with regional film history.

Natural and cultural attractions in the wider Dachau destination

Elsewhere in the wider Dachau destination, other places add to the range of nature and culture attractions. The Karlsfelder See recreation area lies directly beside the built-up area of northern Karlsfeld, covers 58.2 hectares, and is used year-round for walking, jogging, cycling, and recreation. The approximately 2.5-kilometre “Lebensader Maisach” walking trail runs along the Maisach River. It is accessible to visitors with disabilities from Bergkirchen or Günding. With patience and a little luck, you can spot feeding traces left by the beaver, which has returned to the Amper meadows.

In the wider Dachau destination, a Romanesque basilica built in 1104 and preserved to this day stands on Petersberg near Erdweg. The 200-metre sculpture trail leads through Petersberg Forest; a total of ten works of art are displayed at eight stations. The permanent exhibition at the Altomünster Museum presents the history of the Order of the Most Holy Savior (Bridgettines) in Europe and its founder, Saint Bridget of Sweden. It also covers the history of the now-closed Altomünster Monastery, which had existed for 500 years.

In the city of Dachau, one of the places in the wider Dachau destination, the Bezirksmuseum and the Gemäldegalerie focus on different cultural themes. The Bezirksmuseum covers topics including settlement patterns, local history, crafts, trade, everyday life, and religious folk culture across three floors. The Gemäldegalerie’s permanent collection features landscapes and genre paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Dachau’s historic old town centre, which is protected as an ensemble, also offers a reason to stroll and linger. Dachau Palace was once a popular summer residence of the Wittelsbachs; guided tours are held there regularly, with current dates announced as they become available.
