Late Gothic Church and Castle History

The parish and pilgrimage church of St. George and St. Urban stands prominently on a conical hill above Stubenberg. Historically, it is closely linked to Stubenberg Castle, which burned down in 1743. The church also stands on the site of a former castle.

The frescoes in the choir and nave were painted by Carl Johann Gasteiger. The parish church contains a red marble tomb for Wolfgang Paumgartner, dated 1512. For those interested in church art, the late Gothic architecture, wall paintings and a tomb monument with a precise date are the main highlights.

Hiking, Cycling and Climbing

The Marterlweg circular hiking trail no. 10 is about 7 km long and starts at the Gasthaus Hofmark in Stubenberg. It passes the Welschen Marterl and Meindl Chapel, then returns to Stubenberg. This gives you the starting point, approximate length and two named stops together.

The Elexenau Loop is a cycling route of about 14 km through the Stubenberg hills. At about 14 km, it is roughly twice as long as the approximately 7 km Marterlweg; one is a cycling route, the other a circular hiking trail. Near Kirn, climbing enthusiasts can climb up the rocks at the Felsenlabyrinth. The direct route is unpaved. For these routes, it is advisable to check current local conditions.

Culture and Leisure in Rottal-Inn

In the wider Rottal-Inn destination, Rottal Terme has more than 30 pleasantly warm thermal pools at temperatures of 26 to 40 °C, as well as 13 different saunas and steam baths. The spa also includes a 105-metre-long thermal stream and health, prevention and wellness services. Numbers and individual facilities may change during renovations; check the latest information before visiting. Each year, Theater an der Rott presents premieres in drama, musicals, concerts, dance, operetta and opera. It is the only theatre in Germany owned by a district.

The “Gothic Tours” introduce residents and tourists to selected Gothic monuments through brochures, maps, the tour portal and the Gothic portal. The latter offers audio guides to Gothic buildings that can be accessed on site, as well as an online museum with information, learning resources and educational content.

The Rottal-Inn leisure region also has a well-developed, extensive network of trails spanning several hundred kilometres for hikers and cyclists. The tour portal supports individual route planning with elevation profiles, information about trail surfaces and GPX downloads. The Inn Cycle Path runs through the Lower Inn European Reserve and offers diverse insights into the flora and fauna of the Rottal-Inn leisure region.
