Sigmarszell: Hiking along the Leiblach and chapels
Accommodation in Sigmarszell
Two local highlights help orient you as you plan a trip to Sigmarszell: the “Brückenschlag Leiblach” hike and the chapel in Witzigmänn. They appeal to different interests: hiking in the countryside and local culture.
Hiking and culture in Sigmarszell
The family-friendly “Brückenschlag Leiblach” short hike runs mostly along forest trails and meadow paths. From the parish village of Sigmarszell, it descends to the Leiblach along the Leiblach Valley Hiking Trail. The return to Sigmarszell-Kirchdorf follows meadow paths with sweeping views. Along the way, the route crosses the Zellersteg, newly built in 2004, and then climbs a short distance back to the village.
The chapel in Witzigmänn is a distinct landmark for exploring Sigmarszell’s cultural side. It is one of three chapels in the municipality and is located on the road between Bösenreutin and Zeisertsweiler. The two local highlights are different in nature: the hike follows a route, while the chapel draws attention to a single building.
Within the wider Lindau travel destination: culture and landscape
The New Lighthouse in Lindau is 33 metres high and can be reached by climbing 139 steps. On Lindau Island, the Thieves’ Tower, built in 1380, offers a different historical point of reference: for a long time, it marked the western end of the town’s fortifications. The two landmarks thus offer contrasting features: the lighthouse’s height and steps, and the Thieves’ Tower’s former role in the fortifications.
The landscape destinations also offer different highlights. In the Eistobel Nature Reserve, the waters of the Upper Argen plunge down through several waterfalls along a three-kilometre hiking trail. A visitor pavilion provides information before guests descend into the gorge. The Rohrach Gorge is the largest nature reserve in the district of Lindau. Wet and litter meadows, springs, rocky areas and open land provide habitats for rare animals and plants. By comparison, the Eistobel is focused on the river, waterfalls and hiking trail, while the Rohrach Gorge is notable for its variety of habitats.
There are a total of 8 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails in Gestratz; conditions can vary from one winter to the next. Nonnenhorn is also a useful reference point for getting around the wider Lindau travel destination: the town has a centrally located railway station. Boats from the pier in Nonnenhorn connect to Lindau, Bregenz, Meersburg, Konstanz and Mainau Island. Boat timetables are seasonal and subject to change; train services and timetables may also change. Check current connections before planning your trip.
