Local highlights in Rentweinsdorf include Planplatz, a longstanding focal point, the building history of Rentweinsdorf Castle, and the Historic Circular Trail as a hiking option. The church and church fair offer further specific points of interest for planning a trip. Separate from these are the trails and attractions that belong to the Haßberge destination.

Planplatz, Church and Church Fair

Planplatz has long been the central point of Rentweinsdorf. The ensemble includes Rotenhan Castle, the Church of the Holy Trinity, the town hall, the Old Schoolhouse, an inn and the market hall. The square therefore represents an ensemble of different buildings, not just a single historic landmark. Rentweinsdorf’s church was inaugurated with its first service on January 9, 1601. The annual church fair takes place on Ascension Day—a recurring date that links the local calendar to a specific festive occasion.

The Castle and Park Through the Years

Construction of Rentweinsdorf Castle began in 1750 in the Rococo style, on the remains of an older castle. Its unusual floor plan is partly due to the reuse of foundations from the previous building. The castle thus brings together two building phases: the older foundations and the later Rococo-style structure.

Rentweinsdorf Castle and its park are privately owned and can only be viewed from public paths. Check this access restriction before your visit. Work on the castle park began in 1752. Around 1800, the initially strictly symmetrical garden was redesigned as a landscaped park. The Kappelsee lake, with a central island, was created during this transformation. These dates trace a development spanning several decades, from the start of the park to the later changes to its layout.

Hiking Option and Train Travel

The Historic Circular Trail is a hiking option in Rentweinsdorf. Rentweinsdorf Castle can be reached by train via the VGN station in Treinfeld, about one kilometre from Rentweinsdorf. This approximate distance refers to the town. The local circular trail and train travel can therefore be considered as two distinct aspects of planning.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes in the Haßberge

The Haßberge destination has an interconnected network of hiking trails, including the Castles and Palaces Trail, Rennweg, Celtic Trail and Courier Trail. For longer routes, their distances are also useful: the Castles & Palaces Hiking Trail is 190 kilometres long and runs through the German Castle Corner. The Celtic Adventure Trail covers 254 kilometres; it runs from the Werra via the Gleichberge and the Haßberge through the Steigerwald to the Aischgrund. These regional long-distance trails differ in scale from the local hiking option in Rentweinsdorf.

The Haßberge Nature Park is a gently hilly upland region with mixed forests, fields, meadows, historic vineyards and a varied landscape. The experience trails there are designed as half-day or full-day excursions and follow circular routes back to the starting point. This format provides a time frame and makes returning to the starting point a clear feature of the tours.

Castles, Views and Regional Specialities

The Haßberge region has 15 castles and 26 palaces, documenting the region’s later history. Bettenburg is considered a landmark of the Haßberge; Schwedenschanze is a ring fort dating from the Hallstatt period. The Schwedenschanze observation tower crowns a 487-metre-high hilltop on the Haßberg ridge. From there, the view stretches over mixed forest to the Grabfeld region, as well as to the distant heights of the Rhön in the northwest and Thuringia in the north.

Regional food culture also has its own distinctive touches: Fatschenbrunn is known for “Hutzeln”—pears dried into dried fruit according to an old tradition. In the Abt-Degen wine valley, you can combine a hike with Franconian wine at hedgerow inns and wine taverns. As individual venues may change, it is advisable to check what is currently on offer before visiting.
