Oberaurach: Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Oberaurach
When looking for a hotel in Oberaurach, you can first decide which interests will shape your trip: nature watching, cultural heritage or cycling. Local attractions range from the protected Aurach Valley and a Baroque palace complex to designated cycling routes. The wider Haßberge destination offers additional hiking and cultural experiences.
Aurach Valley and Nature Watching
The section of the Aurach Valley between Unterschleichach and Tretzendorf is designated as a nature reserve. It includes a natural-looking stream, hillside and floodplain forests, wet meadows and fishponds. The area is home to one of Lower Franconia’s most significant amphibian populations. Its varied habitats make it a clear focus for travelers interested in nature and landscapes.
Around Tretzendorfer Weiher, visitors may spot endangered barbastelle bats and Bechstein’s bats, as well as greater mouse-eared bats. Insects that depend on particular site conditions may also be seen. This wildlife adds specific species to the picture of the Aurach Valley’s habitats; however, individual sightings are possible, not guaranteed.
Culture and Traditions in Oberaurach
A Baroque palace complex stands in the village district of Tretzendorf. In the Steigerwald, the traditional production of dried fruit and the cultivation of orchards in fields were added to both Bavaria’s and Germany’s national registers of intangible cultural heritage in 2018. The straw-bear procession in Kirchaich is listed as a traditional event held on the first weekend in September. Check current event dates before planning a trip around it.
Cycling Routes and Other Local Attractions
The cycling routes listed in Oberaurach include the Upper Aurach Cycle Route and the Five-Star Cycle Route. Check current route conditions before setting out. Neuschleichach is also home to the “Röthenhang” ski lift. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether it is currently operating.
In the Wider Haßberge Destination
Haßberge Nature Park is a gently rolling low mountain region with mixed forests, fields, meadows and historic vineyards. The experience trails there are half-day or full-day routes that loop back to their starting points. The “Hutzeldorf” European Cultural Route in Fatschenbrunn is around six kilometers long and is also a loop. Information boards and leaflets provide details about the village and its cultural landscape. The tour information therefore differs: the experience trails focus on the time required, while the Hutzeldorf route highlights its approximate length and local theme.
Cultural sites in the wider Haßberge destination include Bettenburg, regarded as a landmark of the Haßberge, and Schwedenschanze, a ringwall dating from the Hallstatt period. Schwedenschanze observation tower stands atop a 487-meter-high summit on the Haßberg ridge. From there, the view stretches over mixed forest to Grabfeld and the distant heights of the Rhön to the northwest and Thuringia to the north.
The railway museum at Hofheim station showcases the history and technology of the Haßfurt–Hofheim local railway. Registration is required to visit the interior; visits are by appointment at 0 95 23 / 13 05. Confirm your appointment before traveling.
