Burgpreppach combines striking architectural history with a route through the town and a multifaceted local history. The town center is home to the Baroque castle and old half-timbered farmsteads, while the surrounding villages add further historic ensembles. The Kugelbahnenweg offers a different focus: it passes sights and invites you to try out the marble runs along the way. You can shape your trip around architecture, outdoor activity or history.

Castle and half-timbered houses

The Baroque castle stands at the heart of the town center, surrounded by old half-timbered farmsteads. Burgpreppach Castle is a former moated castle and a late Baroque building. It was probably built between 1716 and 1730; before that, a moated castle dating from around 1525 stood on the site. This sequence points to two distinct building phases, although the date of the later castle is considered probable.

Expert-led tours of Burgpreppach Castle are available for small and large groups by prior appointment. Confirm the current arrangements with the operator before visiting. The surrounding villages also have their own architectural highlights: Ibind has half-timbered farmsteads, while the village ensemble in Leuzendorf is defined by a country castle and a Rococo church.

On foot and by bike

The Burgpreppach Kugelbahnenweg is just under 4 km long, passes through the town and goes by sights along the way. You can try out marble runs along the route. The path is suitable for strollers and has a total elevation gain of 50 m. Its length, elevation gain and play opportunities give you concrete points to consider when planning this circular route.

There are also newly developed cycling and hiking trails in Burgpreppach and its surrounding villages. Details for these trails may change, so check before setting out. In the wider Haßberge travel region, the tourism office lists easier cycling routes for Sunday outings as well as more challenging routes for experienced cyclists. These route lists may also change. Haßberge Nature Park is a gently hilly upland region with extensive mixed forests, fields and meadows, historic vineyards and a varied landscape. Another regional hiking option is the 190-kilometer Burgen- & Schlösserwanderweg (Castles and Palaces Trail), which runs through the German Castle Corner.

Jewish history in Burgpreppach

From 1681, Burgpreppach was the rabbinical seat for the Jewish communities of the Oberland/Grabfeld region. In 1875, Abraham Hirsch founded the Talmud Torah School there, which included a boarding school. The school provided male Jewish students with preparatory education to become religious teachers; it closed in 1938. During Nazi rule, 79 of the Jews living in Burgpreppach were murdered. The Jewish community in Burgpreppach existed until 1940.

Memorials commemorate different aspects of this history. A memorial stele on Wassergasse commemorates deported Jewish children who once lived there. A memorial stone was erected in memory of the Jewish community. As early as 1708, the local authorities granted the Jews a plot of land on the road to Eichelberg for use as a cemetery. These dates and places add the history of the Jewish community to the story of the town’s architecture.
