Haßfurt: Old Town, Culture and the Main
Accommodation in Haßfurt
Haßfurt is located right on the northern bank of the Main. The long, narrow old town, historic buildings and location on the Main give a stay a variety of cultural and urban highlights. A stroll through the winding lanes offers views of the river, corners between old houses and traces of times gone by.
Old Town and Architectural History
The original elongated rectangular layout of Haßfurt’s old town is still recognizable. The wide main street runs through it, while two large city towers define the townscape. Exploring on foot, you experience the old town through more than just its main thoroughfare: the winding lanes are also part of the walk, leading past old houses and historic discoveries. Views of the Main give the town stroll a special connection to the river.
Among the town’s notable buildings is the Late Gothic Ritterkapelle, a landmark of Haßfurt. The foundation stone for its choir was laid around 1390, and for the nave in 1431. The equally Late Gothic parish church stands on the market square. It houses valuable works by Tilman Riemenschneider, including John the Baptist, Mary with the Child and the Franconian Apostles. The architectural histories of the two churches and their works of art offer different points of interest: the chapel’s long construction period, on the one hand, and the sculptor’s named works in the parish church, on the other.
The Old Town Hall is also part of the town’s historic architecture. It was built between 1514 and 1516 on the site of an earlier building. The former prince-bishop’s tithe barn tells another story: the building dates from the 15th century and has served as a town hall since 1988. During a stay, you can see how buildings from different centuries relate to their present-day functions.
Culture and Events
The town hall is a venue for conferences, concerts and cultural events, and is significant beyond the local area. Together with the old town’s buildings, it broadens the cultural experience beyond architecture alone. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular event, check the current schedule in advance; the venue’s use for events does not mean that a specific program is taking place at all times.
The St. Michael’s Chapel Documentation Center presents church furnishings from the Historicist period, architectural drawings relating to the building’s history, and exhibits from the Ritterkapelle and parish church. It also describes the redesign of the neighboring Ritterkapelle under the direction of Karl Alexander Heideloff (1789–1865). This brings the furnishings, planning and alteration of the buildings into focus alongside the buildings themselves. Check the current visiting arrangements for the Documentation Center before your visit.
Exploring the Main and the Region
For cyclists, Haßfurt is a place to stop along the section of the Main Cycle Route through the Haßberge. The town is also one of the places with a railway station along this section. If you would like to combine a cycling trip with travel by train, you can use the station as a reference point for planning and check the timetables in advance.
The Burgenwinkel Express runs from Haßfurt past castles, ruins and palaces, including Altenstein Castle Ruins with its castle information center, to the medieval town of Ebern. The route focuses on historic destinations between its starting point and endpoint. Operating days and timetables may change; check these details before your trip.
The wider Haßberge destination offers a different perspective on the landscape to complement a visit to the town. Haßberge Nature Park is a gently rolling low mountain region with mixed forests, fields, meadows and historic vineyards. The experience tours there are designed as half-day or full-day trips and follow circular routes back to their starting points. Those interested in hiking will also find the “Castles & Palaces Quality Hiking Trail” in the German Castle Corner. These regional attractions are part of the Haßberge and are distinct from a stroll through the town of Haßfurt.
