If you are planning a hotel stay in Rottendorf, you can choose from cultural attractions, hiking trails of varying lengths, and signposted cycling routes. The moated castle with its Bürgergarten combines historic architecture with a landscaped garden; Käppele chapel and the village museum add to the town’s cultural character.

Moated Castle, Bürgergarten and History

The moated castle with its Bürgergarten is one of Rottendorf’s oldest buildings and was built before 1500. The “Burck,” the former moated castle, was originally fortified with a wall and surrounded by a moat until 1580. A coat-of-arms stone belonging to Lamprecht von Bibra can still be seen at the entrance. After the foundation stone was laid in 2012, the castle was renovated and converted into a library with a reading café, as well as a multipurpose hall for community events and weddings.

The Bürgergarten includes a circular path along the perimeter wall and a water lily pond to the south. A permanent stage stands on the north side of the inner ring wall, with seating tiers for theatrical performances opposite. Here, you can take in the historic details of the moated castle and the layout of the garden together.

Rottendorf’s Käppele chapel also has a long history. Construction of the present-day Käppele began in 1753, and it was dedicated in 1754 to the Sorrowful Mother of God. A small chapel had been built on the same site in 1625, in the midst of the Thirty Years’ War. At the time, it was called the “Heiligen-Häuslein” and could hold about 15 people. The two dates distinguish the earlier small chapel from the Käppele built later.

Village Museum and Rural Life

The Rottendorf Kulturstall at Hauptstraße 14 is a small village museum devoted to rural work and everyday life from 1800 to 1950. The exhibition covers livestock farming and farm management, as well as soil cultivation, sowing, and harvesting. Other topics include viticulture and household management. Tools also illustrate historic trades: cooper, carpenter, wagon maker, cabinetmaker, cobbler, and hairdresser. The tour thus takes visitors from farm work to activities that were part of everyday life in the village.

Hiking Trails by Length and Waymarking

Several circular hiking trails of different lengths and with different themes are available to help you find your way on foot. The “Kronstadter Boden” circular trail is about 12.9 kilometers long and explores the southern part of the Rottendorf district. It starts and ends on “Am Marienheim” street; parking is available there and nearby.

Two other trails are each about six kilometers long. The “Von Kirche zu Kirche” (“From Church to Church”) circular trail is about 6.2 kilometers long and is marked with a yellow horizontal bar on a white background. It leads to three churches, passing two of them, as well as two chapels and numerous wayside shrines in Rottendorf. The “Rothofwanderweg” is about 6.1 kilometers long and marked with a blue horizontal bar on a white background. It explores Rothof, a popular day-trip destination among Rottendorf residents. If you compare the routes by length, you will find two trails of around six kilometers and one considerably longer circular tour.
