A stay in Margetshöchheim can be planned around different aspects of the town: historic half-timbered houses, trails along the Main River, and cultural or recreational activities each offer a distinct starting point. To get your bearings, it is worth considering the town’s history, the river landscape and the surrounding heights separately. This can help you first decide whether you are mainly looking for a historic townscape, an event, riverside trails or views across the Main Valley.

Half-Timbered Houses and Local History

The oldest documented building in Margetshöchheim is at Mainstraße 2: a half-timbered house richly decorated with carved details. The year 1197 is inscribed on its left corner post. The town’s first small church was built around 1300 on the site of today’s parish church. The two dates refer to different things: 1197 appears on the half-timbered house, while around 1300 refers to the first church building. Margetshöchheim’s riverside area is also characterised by old farmsteads and half-timbered houses. Half-timbering is therefore not just a feature of the individual building on Mainstraße, but also shapes the character of the riverside area.

Festivals and Culture in Town

Margetshöchheim hosts the annual Margaretenfest in honour of the village’s patron saint. MainART is a well-known art festival in the old town. The festivals have different focuses: the Margaretenfest centres on the village’s patron saint, while MainART is an art festival held in the old town. If an event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates in advance.

Cycling and Hiking

The route of the Main Cycle Route is worth considering for a bike ride along the Main: awarded five stars by the ADFC, it runs directly through Margetshöchheim along the riverbank. The Two-Banks Panorama Trail offers a different perspective, crossing the Margetshöchheimer Höhfeldplatte. Several hiking trails explore the town’s surrounding heights and offer views across the Main Valley. This gives you a choice between a riverside route and trails with scenic views. From Margetshöchheim, the opposite bank of the Main can be reached on foot via the Mainsteg footbridge.

Activities on the Main

Margetshöchheim’s riverbank is also used for stand-up paddleboarding and surfing. If you are planning a trip on the Main, you can contact the Margetshöchheimer Segelkameradschaft; check contact arrangements separately. There is a beach volleyball court on the cycle path along the northern bank of the Main. A swimming cove with a play area has been created by the barbecue area on the southern edge of Margetshöchheim. Check the condition of the swimming cove before your visit.

You can weigh up the different aspects of the town according to your interests: history and half-timbered houses, a festival date, trails across the surrounding heights, or activities on the water. The destinations also differ in location: the Main Cycle Route runs along the riverbank through the town, while the panorama trail crosses the Höhfeldplatte.
