Höchberg offers several options to consider when planning a trip: the Mainlandbad, trails through woodland, and regional culture and history. Depending on whether you would prefer to spend your time at the swimming baths, outdoors or exploring local traditions, you can give these highlights different priorities.

Swimming and Outdoor Trails

The Mainlandbad in Höchberg has a 25-metre swimming pool with five lanes. The large non-swimmers’ pool has a water depth of 0.6 to 1.30 metres. The two pools therefore differ both in how they are used and in their dimensions. In addition to the swimming baths, the Mainlandzentrum includes a restaurant with a bowling alley, a sports hall and a mini-golf course. Since information about municipal facilities may change when operators change, it is advisable to check the operator’s latest information before visiting.

For a walk with an approximate time in mind, try the circular hike along the forest nature trail: after about an hour, it returns to the car park at the Waldsportplatz. Another starting point is the “Kreuzle” at the end of “Weg zum Kreuz” street. From there, hiking trails lead to the Frankenwarte and into the Steinbachtal valley. The “Naturpfad” (Nature Trail) in Höchberg’s municipal area runs from Oberzell Monastery through state and municipal forest to Erbachshof. These routes offer different ways to plan a walk: the forest nature trail’s approximate duration is a useful guide, while the routes from the Kreuzle are defined by their named destinations.

Traditions and Events

Since 2020, the Kulturscheune Höchberg has been a meeting place for culture lovers from Würzburg district. Its programme includes cabaret, music, theatre, film, readings, lectures and events for specific audiences. If you have a particular evening in mind, check the dates of the relevant events.

One established local tradition is the “Dance Around the Maypole”: it takes place every year on 1 May in Höchberg’s market square. Members of the Heimat- und Trachtenverein dance in traditional Franconian dress. On Kirchweih Sunday, local residents can take part in the “Hammeltanz” (ram dance) and “Göggelesschlagen” on the market square. Both customs are tied to specific occasions, so the date of the event is key when planning your trip.

History and Architecture

The seven Stations of the Cross at Höchberg’s Kreuzkapelle (Cross Chapel) have several cultural and historical connections. Their connection to the witch trials accounts for the chapel’s classification as a cultural and historical monument, while its association with the renowned master craftsman Michael Kern gives it artistic significance. The content of the relief panels also gives the monument religious significance.

The preparatory school in Höchberg has two documentation rooms with a permanent exhibition. The former Israelitische Präparandenschule now houses an exhibition on this subject; guided tours are also available. If you would like to join a tour, check the arrangements in advance. This will help you plan a visit focused on this historical subject.

The history of other Höchberg buildings also goes back several centuries. The former synagogue was purchased by the Evangelical Lutheran parish in 1951 and converted into an Evangelical place of worship. The Catholic parish church of Mariä Geburt was, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries, one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites for Würzburg and the surrounding area. These two examples represent different chapters in the town’s history: the conversion of a building and the church’s former religious significance.
