Altenkunstadt: History, Kordigast and Strössendorf
Accommodation in Altenkunstadt
When looking for a hotel in Altenkunstadt, you can shape your trip around the local attractions: the former synagogue represents the area’s history of remembrance and culture, Kordigast offers summits, hiking trails and fossil hunting, and Strössendorf features a historic castle-and-church ensemble. These different highlights can help you decide what you want to focus on during your stay before comparing hotels.
A place of remembrance and early settlement
The Altenkunstadt Synagogue was built in 1726. Since 1993, the former synagogue has served as a place of remembrance and commemoration, as well as a cultural space for the municipality of Altenkunstadt. The two dates bring together different aspects: 1726 marks the construction of the building, while 1993 marks the beginning of its use for commemoration and culture. A much earlier historical reference can be found on Kordigast: evidence shows that Altenkunstadt’s local mountain was already settled by Celts in the 5th century BC. The local story therefore spans a specific 18th-century building and the region’s prehistoric settlement history.
Kordigast: two summits and different outings
Kordigast is the municipality’s local mountain and has two summits: Great Kordigast is 536 m high, while Little Kordigast is 538 m high. The elevations reveal a small curiosity: despite its name, Little Kordigast is two metres higher than Great Kordigast. You can distinguish the two summits by their names and elevations.
Family-friendly hiking trails follow the “Schlauwienix” nature trail to the “Spielwienix” adventure playground on Kordigast. Another activity focuses on fossils: near the Waldfrieden car park, budding geologists can try their luck at a rock-knocking site and find fossils from the Jurassic period. This offers two different options: a trail leading to a playground, or fossil hunting at a specific site. Finding a fossil is a matter of luck.
Strössendorf and a cycling route
In Strössendorf, a district of Altenkunstadt, the castle was built in the 12th century and gradually transformed into the present-day palace over time. High above the Main, a prominent ensemble of palace and church stands framed by tall trees. The focus here differs from the themes on Kordigast: Strössendorf is about the castle’s development into a palace and the striking ensemble above the Main.
A cycling route also offers a practical point of reference for planning your trip. The Ziegenfeldertal Cycle Route runs from Hollfeld, connecting to the Fränkische Schweiz high trail, through Kleinziegenfeld and along the Weismain watercourse, through the town of Weismain and on to the Altenkunstadt/Burgkunstadt area on the Main. If the route is part of your plans, check the route conditions before setting out.
Lichtenfels as a wider travel destination
The wider travel destination of Lichtenfels has other distinctive attractions. The Lichtenfels Basket Market takes place every year on the third weekend in September. If this festival is the reason for your trip, check the dates for the relevant year. Lichtenfels’s old town has retained its typical Franconian character; the Bamberg Gate and Kronach Gate are still standing, and parts of the old town wall remain visible. The Main Cycle Route runs right through the old town.
The 14-kilometre Basketry Culture Trail is also in the wider travel destination of Lichtenfels: it connects Lichtenfels and Michelau on nature-rich paths through the Main floodplains. Its 23 information boards cover the history and traditions of basket-making, the basket industry and basket trading along the Upper Main. Other installations mentioned include a willow labyrinth for children near Oberwallenstadt, a willow shell in the river swimming area, and a woven tipi at the Ortswiesensee in Oberwallenstadt. In the regional context, basketry culture and its stops sit alongside Altenkunstadt’s local attractions, such as the synagogue, Kordigast and Strössendorf.
