Freilassing is centrally located, with excellent transport links, just outside the gates of Salzburg, a city of trade fairs and world culture, amid the picturesque mountain landscape of Upper Bavaria. You can get to know the town through a range of highlights: railway history, exhibitions, a weekly market and opportunities to get active. You can plan your stay around whichever of these aspects interests you most.

Railway history in Freilassing

In 1860, the construction of the Munich–Salzburg railway line made Freilassing a station on an important European transport route on the border with the Austrian Empire. Lokwelt Freilassing is devoted to railway history: it features a lovingly restored roundhouse and tells the story of 150 years of railways. The roundhouse was built between 1902 and 1905 and is an important industrial heritage site. At Lokwelt, the history of the building meets the broader development of the railway.

Town museum and other cultural venues

The Freilassing Town Museum is divided into five sections: prehistory and early history, the development of the town, Freilassing as a border town, railways and the economy. One special exhibit is a young Bavarian woman in a display grave. She lived here around 1,500 years ago. The subjects range from early traces of settlement to the town’s development and its role as a border town.

The association that runs the town museum received the City of Freilassing’s Cultural Promotion Award in 1998 and holds three special exhibitions each year on a variety of topics. As the programme may change, it is advisable to check the current exhibition dates before your visit.

Freilassing City Gallery hosts exhibitions by regional artists throughout the year. It is located on the ground floor of the Old Fire Station at Hermann-Ober-Platz. St Mary’s Church is home to an early Neoclassical high altar made of multicoloured Untersberg marble. Designed by Wolfgang Hagenauer, it was created in 1775/76.

Weekly market and activities

The weekly market, also known as the Green Market, takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on HauptstraĂźe, in the pedestrian zone. Check the dates and opening hours before your trip so you can plan your market visit.

There are various ways to get active. The Badylon sports and recreation centre has an outdoor, covered climbing wall run by the German Alpine Club. The wall is up to nine metres high. The easy Freilassing cycling loop starts at the station, leads into town and includes Lokwelt. It runs along the Saalach for part of the way before returning to Freilassing station.

The Saalach floodplain nearby

Near Freilassing, the Saalach floodplain forms a green belt around seven kilometres long along the Saalach, the border river. It extends across a larger landscape area; the cycling loop, by contrast, follows the river only for part of its route. This means a bike ride through Freilassing and a look at the landscape along the Saalach can be considered different aspects of the surrounding area.
