Ramsau b.Berchtesgaden can be discovered through a variety of landscape and cultural themes. Wimbachklamm runs along steep rock faces for around 200 metres; Zauberwald is a mountain forest landscape shaped by a rockslide. At Wartstein, the wooded summit offers views across the Berchtesgaden mountains. The parish church of St. Sebastian and the historic ensemble add the area’s history. The themes therefore range from trails and woodland to panoramic views and architectural history.

Gorge, woodland and views

The approximately 200-metre hiking trail through Wimbachklamm runs along steep rock faces over bridges and walkways. Its length and features give a clear picture of this gorge route: the focus here is on passing through a landscape of rock walls. Wartstein, by contrast, is defined by its panoramic views. So if you are choosing between a path through a gorge and a viewpoint, the two places differ above all in the kind of landscape experience they offer.

Zauberwald by Hintersee is a rugged mountain forest landscape shaped thousands of years ago by a rockslide and the enormous boulders it left behind. A footpath through Zauberwald was created by the Ramsau Beautification Association in 1896/97. Two different periods come together here: the landscape’s formation thousands of years ago and the path built later. Zauberwald in the mountaineering village of Ramsau bears the “Bavaria’s Most Beautiful Geotopes” quality seal, certified by the Bavarian Environment Agency. It is also one of three natural highlights in Berchtesgadener Land.

Wartstein is a wooded viewpoint above Hintersee. Its summit offers panoramic views of the Berchtesgaden mountains. This sets it apart from the immediate rock scenery of Wimbachklamm and the forest landscape of Zauberwald: here, the focus is on expansive views.

Church and historic ensemble

The parish church of St. Sebastian was built in 1512 under Prince-Provost Gregor Rainer and is dedicated to Saint Sebastian and Saint Fabian. Its history can also be considered in relation to the buildings and places around it: together with its historic cemetery, the former sacristan’s house and the rectory to the west of the church, it forms an architectural ensemble.

The year it was built, the prince-provost and the dedication give the church a specific historical context. The ensemble adds the surrounding buildings to this picture: rather than looking at a single building, it also includes the cemetery, sacristan’s house and rectory. In Ramsau, therefore, sacred architectural history and the experience of the landscape are distinct themes.

More natural attractions

The grounds of the Klausbachhaus include a sensory garden with a barefoot trail and sound stations. These features offer a different experience from a hiking trail or viewpoint: the feel of the ground and the sounds take centre stage here. So, alongside trails and landscape views, the selection also includes a place where nature can be experienced through different senses.

The wider destination of Berchtesgadener Land

In the wider destination of Berchtesgadener Land, Berchtesgaden National Park offers a diverse network of hiking trails and alpine paths spanning 260 km. This regional scale differs considerably from the individual, approximately 200-metre route through Wimbachklamm: the figures describe different scales and help distinguish individual trails from an extensive network.
