Visitors planning a stay in Diedorf can choose from a wide range of activities: observing the night sky, learning about nature and the environment, exploring a collection of masks from cultures around the world, or going on a bike tour. Some activities have special visiting arrangements. It is therefore worth planning your itinerary with both the theme and the schedule in mind: an evening observation session, insights into nature and culture, or an active route each offers a different focus.

Observatory and Environmental Centre

The Diedorf Observatory regularly holds observation evenings on Fridays from 8 p.m., offering expert-guided views through its telescopes, weather permitting. Check the operator’s current schedule before travelling.

The Schmuttertal Environmental Centre offers a year-round programme for all ages, focusing on sustainable lifestyles, biodiversity, climate change and water. In the children’s activity garden, a barefoot path and touch boxes invite children to experience nature through their senses. The bat corner provides information about native bat species and their lives. The programme thus ranges from environmental issues to direct experiences of nature. The centre also presents the cultural landscape of Bavarian Swabia, past and present, and provides information about the biodiversity project in the Schmuttertal FFH area.

Mask Collection and Cycle Route in Diedorf

The International Mask Museum in Diedorf offers a different perspective: it has 9,000 old masks, authentically worn by people from cultures around the world. This culture-focused collection complements the environmental centre’s nature and environment themes. The mask exhibition can be visited by prior telephone appointment only. Arrange your visit with the museum in advance.

The Freiherr von Zech Cycle Route is a loop that starts and ends in Diedorf. You can therefore plan your stay around a bike tour that begins and ends in the town, rather than focusing exclusively on individual attractions.

More options in the wider Augsburg destination

For a different perspective, consider the wider Augsburg destination. The Bonstetten LandArt Art Trail is a 5.65-kilometre circular hiking route. Along the trail, artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures. Its length and the way the art is presented give the route a distinctive character: the hike is combined with the artist’s personal explanations of the works.

The three-kilometre Meditation Trail also runs from Oberschönenfeld Cistercian Abbey to the Weiherhof on the edge of the Schwarzachtal forest. It is shorter than the LandArt Art Trail and leads to a named endpoint, while the art trail is a loop. The two routes can therefore be compared by length and route type.

The Augsburg district also has a well-developed cycle path network. Westwood Alpacas offers regular alpaca hikes and excursions through the nature park. The Stauden, Holzwinkel and Reischenau regions are part of the Augsburg–Western Forests Nature Park. These regional activities add more hiking routes, cycle paths and nature experiences to Diedorf’s attractions.
