Dinkelscherben offers several clearly distinct ways to spend your stay: the Cultural Trail shares stories from the main town and its districts, the local history museum brings together collections from the Reischenau region, and the castle ruins and a circular route offer their own historical and scenic highlights. You can choose what to focus on based on whether you are most interested in local history, museum collections or points of interest along woodland paths.

The Cultural Trail and local stories

The Cultural Trail focuses on buildings and places of historical and cultural significance. In the main town and its districts, steles display text and image panels. They share local stories, important events and anecdotes. This draws attention not only to individual buildings but also to the stories of different places. The Cultural Trail currently includes 25 steles and is being expanded gradually. Combining text and images offers an engaging introduction to each topic.

Local history museum: collections from the Reischenau region

The local history museum brings together exhibits on local history and cultural history from the Reischenau region. The collections include finds from the medieval Zusameck Castle, a mammoth tooth, documents on local history, craft objects, religious folk art and traditional costumes. The range thus spans archaeological finds and written records to objects related to crafts and regional culture.

One focus is the Scherer collection from the 19th century: it comprises the estate of the Scherer family of painters from Ettelried, including stained-glass windows, religious motifs, oil paintings, sketches and drawings. Visitors with a particular interest in painting and religious imagery will find a dedicated collection here alongside the exhibits on local and cultural history.

The local history museum is closed during the winter months. Groups of five or more and school classes can visit outside regular opening hours by prior arrangement by phone. Before travelling, check the latest visitor information and confirm any arranged group visit by phone.

Zusameck Castle and chapel

The remains of the high-to-late medieval Zusameck Castle lie on Schlossberg, also known as Kalvarienberg, north of and above Dinkelscherben market town. The castle chapel has survived; it was restored in the Neo-Gothic style around 1850. The castle ruins complement the finds from Zusameck in the local history museum with another connection to the area’s history, while the chapel provides a distinctive architectural highlight.

Woodland and scenic points along the Otto Schneider Circular Route

The Otto Schneider Circular Route starts in Dinkelscherben and passes a woodland nature trail and two forest ponds. Its woodland section also includes a burial mound and a slate coal geotope along the route. At the edge of the forest, the circular route offers a view of the Zusam Valley; it also reaches the former Wolfsberg Castle.

The circular route brings together a variety of themes: the woodland nature trail, ponds, a burial mound, the geotope, the view and the former castle. This distinguishes its landscape-focused route from the Cultural Trail, whose steles share local stories and important events.

Themes for your stay

If you are mainly interested in local stories, the Cultural Trail and local history museum offer different ways to explore them: the trail features explanations on steles, while the museum focuses on collection items. The Otto Schneider Circular Route, by contrast, focuses on woodland and scenic points, as well as the former Wolfsberg Castle. When planning a museum visit, bear in mind its seasonal closure; group visits outside regular opening hours require an arrangement by phone.
