Zusmarshausen combines nature trails, cycling and a direct glimpse into local history. The market town and all its districts lie within Augsburg-Western Forests Nature Park. For travel by car, Zusmarshausen has direct access to the Zusmarshausen junction on the A 8 Munich–Stuttgart (E 52). When choosing where to stay, the landscape, a particular tour or a cultural focus may all be deciding factors.

Nature Trails and Woodland Stops

A trail circles Rothsee in Zusmarshausen, inviting you to enjoy a leisurely walk surrounded by nature. The Zusamaue nature trail offers a different focus: this idyllic circular hiking trail lies south of Zusmarshausen and Gabelbach, near Rücklenmühle; along the way, you can observe wildlife and plant life. The Zusam Landscape Conservation Association established the trail in 1997–1998. The two circular routes therefore differ mainly in their stated focus: at Rothsee, the emphasis is on a leisurely walk, while in the Zusamaue, it is on the opportunity to observe nature.

The “Am Horn” forest discovery trail near Zusmarshausen uses information boards to introduce 25 tree species. At the trail’s turning point, a covered rest area invites you to enjoy a snack or take a break.

Cycling and Roman History

The Zusam Cycle Path passes through Zusmarshausen on the section from Dinkelscherben to Donauwörth. The route is signposted throughout and runs mainly along side roads or paths away from traffic. Unlike the circular routes mentioned above, this section passes through Zusmarshausen on its way from Dinkelscherben to Donauwörth.

The Zusmarshausen Museum displays finds from the Roman bridge settlement of “Pontone”. Pontone stood on the Augsburg–Mainz Roman road. The historical connection is therefore specific: the focus is on finds from a bridge settlement on a named Roman road.

Trails and Nature in the Wider Augsburg Destination

The LandArt Bonstetten art trail is a 5.65-kilometre circular hiking route where the artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures. The shorter Meditation Trail is three kilometres long; it leads from Oberschönenfeld Cistercian Abbey to Weiherhof on the edge of the Schwarzachtal forest. This lets you choose between an art trail with a longer route and a shorter path with named endpoints.

In the wider Augsburg destination, Augsburg district has a well-developed network of cycle paths. The Stauden, Holzwinkel and Reischenau regions are part of Augsburg – Western Forests Nature Park. Westwood Alpacas offers regular alpaca hikes and excursions through the nature park. The Zusam Cycle Path provides a specific connection from Dinkelscherben to Donauwörth via Zusmarshausen; the well-developed network of cycle paths in Augsburg district describes the broader regional context. When planning, you can distinguish a particular route from the wider cycling infrastructure available for cycle tours.
