Königsbrunn: Museums, Nature and Ilsesee
Accommodation in Königsbrunn
If you are looking for a hotel in Königsbrunn, it is worth first considering what you would like your stay to focus on: archaeology and local history, observing nature or spending time at Lake Ilsesee. The sights range from archaeological finds and local museums to nature trails and a notable section of the Via Claudia Augusta.
Museums and Local History
The Archaeological Museum displays a fully preserved skeleton with grave goods from the Bell Beaker period. It also presents archaeological finds excavated in the southern district of Augsburg, with a regional focus. Here, you can see both a specific skeleton with grave goods and finds from the wider region.
The Lechfeld Museum focuses on Königsbrunn’s beginnings, as well as the farming life, living conditions and clothing of the settlement’s founders in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These subjects offer insights into both the town’s development and the living conditions and clothing of its early settlers.
Two steles in Königsbrunn’s townscape mark the history trail commemorating the Battle of Lechfeld in 955. The Gregor Kruk Gallery in the town hall foyer is believed to house one of the largest collections of works by Gregor Kruk.
The Mercateum houses the world’s largest globe based on historical cartography. Inside, an exhibition explores the trade in goods with India and other countries in Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. On a guided tour, you can discover how the globe was made, historical maps and the history of long-distance trade. Check the current tour schedule in advance.
Nature and Outdoor Activities
The Königsbrunn Nature Museum presents local habitats, including the Lech, the heathlands, aquatic habitats and forests. A nine-metre-long model shows the Lech as a natural wild river; underwater viewing points let you observe fish. The museum thus offers an overview of various habitats alongside an engaging view of the river.
The Park of the Senses features an herb garden, a barefoot path and Kneipp pools as part of a sensory and relaxing experience. The Kneipp facilities are supplied with groundwater.
The Königsbrunn Heath is one of the few remaining sections of the Lech Valley floristic corridor and provides a habitat for animal and plant species that are migrating. The surrounding area is used by walkers, joggers, inline skaters and cyclists. Visitors to the heath should stay on the designated paths and leave their bicycles at its edge.
The nature trail along the Lochbach, newly created in 2023, is about 2.5 kilometres long and runs through a nature reserve. Walkers and other visitors seeking relaxation can learn about nature along the way. The Schaffner Bridge once again allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Lochbach towards Lake Mandichosee.
Another striking feature of the landscape is the dead-straight embankment of the Via Claudia Augusta, visible above ground. It runs for eleven kilometres between Königsbrunn-Neuhaus and Untermeitingen and is one of the longest remaining continuous, relatively well-preserved sections of the road.
Lake Ilsesee: Swimming and the Underwater World
Lake Ilsesee lies on the northeastern edge of Königsbrunn. Formed by gravel extraction, this enclosed body of water is fed by groundwater and has been developed into a local recreation area. Families can swim there, and there is also a lifeguard station by the lake. The lake is popular with divers for its diverse underwater animal and plant life, and there is a diving centre on the eastern shore. If diving is part of your plans, check the diving centre’s current information in advance.
