Discover Treuchtlingen: Thermal Baths, Roman History and Views
Accommodation in Treuchtlingen
Treuchtlingen between thermal baths and history
Treuchtlingen offers a range of options to shape your travel plans: thermal bathing, visible traces of Roman history, viewpoints and routes through the Graben district. The destinations below are quite different, ranging from pools and saunas to archaeological floor plans and a longer circular route. This makes it easy to plan your stay around the topics that interest you most.
Thermal bathing and views
Altmühltherme Treuchtlingen offers thermal pools with healing water from state-certified therapeutic springs. Facilities also include an outdoor thermal pool with a thermal garden and Kneipp facility, hot whirlpools, and a sauna area on the Altmühl. If you plan to visit, take the different areas of the complex into account and check current operating information before your trip.
The viewpoints also differ in their surroundings. Villa Rustica lies on the southern slope of Treuchtlingen’s Nagelberg, offering views of Treuchtlingen. The floor plan of the Roman estate is easy to make out: several living rooms, a colonnade and a shelter are arranged around a courtyard. This makes it possible to understand how the rooms were laid out, rather than looking at individual features in isolation. Check access details before visiting.
The ruins of Obere Veste Castle also offer views of the town of Treuchtlingen. If you plan to visit the ruins, check current access arrangements in advance, as well as the separate procedure for obtaining the tower key.
Roman traces and the town palace
The first and third upper floors of Treuchtlingen Town Palace contain fragments of Renaissance wall paintings dating from the mid-16th century. Simple wooden ceilings have been preserved in the Count’s Hall. The exhibitions are open to visitors during the Tourist Information Office’s opening hours. The town palace therefore offers a different way to explore local history than the visible floor plan of Villa Rustica: here, the focus is on wall paintings and details of the rooms.
Fossa Carolina is located in Treuchtlingen-Graben. The district is also a reference point for routes: Loop Trail 6 of the Altmühltal Panorama Trail and the Altmühltal Cycle Route pass through Graben. As route markings may change, check the current route before setting out.
Routes by theme and time required
Four themed tours lead to sights in the main town of Treuchtlingen and the nearby area: the Medieval Tour, the Celts and Romans Tour, the Churches Tour and the Railway Tour. Some sections are not accessible to people with disabilities, so take this into account when choosing a route. The thematic structure helps you plan your walk around an area of interest without treating all the tours as interchangeable.
For a longer hike, the Treuchtlingen-Bubenheim Orchard Experience is another option. This themed trail and educational path is a 14-kilometre circular route; the stated walking time is four hours and should be treated as a guide. The route starts at Altmühltherme in Treuchtlingen. By comparison, Loop Trail 6 and the Altmühltal Cycle Route are described here primarily as routes that pass through Graben. This gives you the choice between a designated circular route with a stated distance and duration, and routes that pass through the district.
A regional perspective on Roman history
In the wider travel destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, the Limes runs for around 40 kilometres across the district; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. In Weißenburg, the Roman Museum displays Germany’s largest Roman hoard and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. These regional connections complement the Treuchtlingen sites with further aspects of Roman history in the district.
